Landmark CPM Legislation Awaits Governor's Signature

Last week, the South Dakota House of Representatives passed legislation designed to create a licensure board for Certified Professional Midwives. The bill comes after 25 years of efforts on the part of South Dakota home birth advocates, including South Dakota Birth Matters.

The bill passed with more than the two-thirds majority needed to override a gubernatorial veto, so advocates are hopeful that the bill will become law and go into effect on July 1st. According to South Dakota Birth Matters, the next step will be for the Governor to appoint a five person board, followed by the rulemaking process.

News from the DOR

Evidence-informed Practice webinar now available – get your CEUs!

How do you find the best research to inform practice? How do you evaluate the research you find? How do you effectively engage clients in shared decision-making? On February 16, 2017, MANA DOR Director of Research Education, Dr. Courtney L. Everson, answered these questions and more as part of an invited national webinar entitled, "Evidence-Informed Practice: Research Literacy & Shared Decision-Making." This webinar was hosted by the National Association of Certified Professional Midwives (NACPM) as part of their webinar series on CPM practice. The webinar introduced midwives to the basics of research literacy, critical appraisal of the literature, and applying research to midwifery care. Evidence-informed practice (EIP) resides at the intersection of the best available research, the midwife's professional expertise, and the client's individual values, needs, and context. This webinar taught participants how to integrate research effectively into midwifery practice using the EIP framework!

The webinar was well attended and very well received. Did you miss it? No worries! Recordings of the NACPM webinars are always available on the NACPM website here.
