Integrative Resuscitation of the Newborn

#MANA19 All Day Wednesday Pre-Conference Session with Karen Strange

This material was chosen because although every actively practicing midwife is required to keep a current NRP card, AAP/NRP doesn’t include any material written specifically for the out of hospital birth setting. After 900+ hours of debriefs under her belt over the past 29 years (including 6 years as the chair of the Texas Complaint Review Process), Karen Strange has continued to develop and update her content regarding resuscitation of the newborn, specifically for midwives. Karen has surveyed countless midwives through debriefs to find out the most common variations of normal (most likely complications), common misunderstandings, and what typically prevents appropriate action. Karen has found that most midwives are not clear on the when, why and how to breathe for a baby who is not breathing or not breathing well. Karen focuses on the least traumatic resuscitation techniques and simple, clear tools to use when fear and panic set in... continue reading

#MANA19 All Day Monday Post-Conference Session with Sarita Bennett and Vicki Hedley

The ALSO Provider Course is an educational program designed to assist health professionals in developing and maintaining the knowledge and skills needed to effectively manage the emergencies which arise in maternity care.

After completing the online module at least three days prior to the hands on module, participants will be prepared for a highly interactive day with five workstations to practice emergency simulations on shoulder dystocia, emergency breech delivery, postpartum hemorrhage, assisted vaginal delivery (vacuum), and maternal resuscitation. Discussions on Maternal Safety, Labor Dystocia and Preeclampsia/Eclampsia allow for group interaction with group testing to manage a variety of emergencies closing the day... continue reading.

A Letter from MANA's incoming Director of Organizational Development

David Carter-Plake, LM, CPM

When I was asked to join the MANA board, I was a bit terrified at first. I had never worked on a board of directors and definitely never for an organization as important as MANA, but I knew that I wanted to help make a difference in midwifery. MANA has suffered negative press and controversies over the past several years and instead of sitting on the sidelines contemplating the issues, I wanted to be part of the change. That's when I decided that joining the MANA board was something I was called to do.

Being a part of MANA is important to me, as a member of the organization, and now as the incoming Director of Organizational Development. As midwives, we need to stand together for the profession, for the people that we care for and as support for one another. MANA is working hard to pull us all together as a community of midwives who have a common goal-to provide the best care to the people we serve and to advance our profession as a whole.

I am honored to serve on this board, to be a member of MANA, and to help serve all of the midwives of North America. I look forward to seeing everyone at conference this year!

Yours,
David Carter-Plake, LM, CPM
