RESPECT!

2016 Conference Theme Announced

Respect birth, respect midwives, respect community. This year's conference theme highlights the respect midwives have for the birthing process and the families they serve, as well as the respect midwives deserve for the professionalism, dedication, and caring they bring to their calling. The imagery alludes to the passion that midwives feel for their work, and the "fire" that keeps them going — through all those long days and nights — serving families and their babies.

The Respect logo was created by Jen Fleisher of Charmed Designworks, with support from national planning committee members. Jen is a midwife-in-training precepting with MANA VP Sarita Bennett. She's also a mother, birth doula, and yoga instructor based in Virginia.

Save the date to join us in Atlanta this year, October 13th - 16th. Keep up-to-date on registration, speakers, and more at our Facebook event page here.

Check out our new website! The schedule will be posted soon, and registration is not yet live (so those links are not active) but we wanted to give you a sneak peek. Here's hoping you love it too!

Consensus Statement on Human Rights in Childbirth in the US

MANA's Division of Access and Equity held a stakeholders meeting following the Birthing Justice Summit in Los Angeles on May 26th, where MANA leadership also participated in drafting a consensus statement on human rights in childbirth in the US, with other leaders from across the country.

We look forward to sharing more in up coming webinars and at the conference in Atlanta!

Sister Organization AME Seeking Board Nominations

MANA's sister organization, The Association of Midwifery Educators (AME) is now inviting nominations to the Board of Directors for its 2016 election.

AME is looking for individuals to serve a 2 year term who have the knowledge, skills and passion to support midwifery education in our changing political, cultural and social landscape, and a commitment to the work of undoing racism in midwifery education.

To qualify, the nominee must be (1) an educator in midwifery or related health professions, including academic faculty and clinical instructors or preceptors, and (2) a current member of AME. Current or former midwifery license (CPM, CNM or state licensed) is preferred. If you have a passion for midwifery education and don’t feel you fully meet these requirements, you’re welcome to apply anyway. Exceptions may be made for applicants with specific skills needed to meet AME’s strategic initiatives.

Self-nominations are welcome. If nominating another person, please make sure they are willing to be on the ballot. Nominations will be open until Monday July 18, 2016.

For more information, contact Sharon DeJoy, PhD, MPH, CPH, CPM.
