Honoring Black History Month

When The Bough Breaks Access Extended for 2015

The number of infants who die before their first birthday is much higher in the U.S. than in other countries. And for African Americans the rate is nearly twice as high as for white Americans. Educational attainment and income levels do not explain the difference: well-educated Black women have birth outcomes worse than white women who haven't finished high school. Why?

This ground breaking documentary takes a deep dive into the causes of the unacceptable rates of mortality and morbidity for African American mothers and babies in the United States. As a part of Black History Month, MANA is once again making this documentary available to our community at no charge. Understanding the root causes is a critical first step toward reducing these devastating health disparities.

ACOG Affirms Birth Centers, Midwives

ACOG affirmed all types of midwives - including CPMs, CNMs, CMs, and LMs - as appropriate primary care providers in the birth center setting, according to the recent joint consensus statement released by ACOG and the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine. In this recent write up by Science and Sensibility, MANA applauds the ACOG statement. MANA also calls on ACOG to expand their definition of place of birth for low-risk women to include the home setting.
