Join Us for #MANACAM17 Opening Night

Thursday, Nov 1

Opening night festivities are always exciting. This year we have an inspiring speaker, Christine Morton, as well as the annual Exhibition Hall Opening Reception with a cash bar. Dr. Morton's talk, Teamwork Makes the Dream Work: Collaborative Efforts to Improve Maternal Outcomes in the United States will open our minds and hearts to the essential goal of Collaboration, and set the tone for a weekend of learning, sharing and working together for families, babies, and birth.

The Boat is Filling Up!

Get on the Boat with FAM and MANA

Come join in the fun with the Foundation for the Advancement of Midwifery (FAM) and the Midwives Alliance (MANA) for a beautiful evening cruise on Long Beach Harbor. We will set sail on the "Christopher" at 7:00pm on Friday, November 3rd.

Enjoy good company for music and dancing while looking out on the spectacular city of Long Beach lit up at night.  Celebrate with us as we honor Diane Holzer, LM, CPM, PA-C, practicing midwife for almost 30 years, and obstetrician Dr. Ronald Wu who are esteemed for their work in the local birthing community and have helped transform the way families experience birth.

Diane has dedicated over 25 years of her life to serving the larger midwifery movement. She was a founding mother and co-creator of multiple midwifery organizations. She currently serves on the Midwifery Advisory committee for the California Medical board and is the Midwife Consultant and teacher for the program Jungle Mamas that is supported by Pachamama Alliance, an organization dedicated to working in partnership with the indigenous people in the Ecuadorian Amazon rain forest.

During his almost 50 year career as an obstetrician, Dr. Ronald Wu has delivered more than 20,000 babies. He describes himself as an “old-school doctor” who understands “women want choices” when giving birth — such as the option to forgo a cesarean section for a vaginal-breech delivery. Patients have traveled from as far away as China and India specifically seeking his services.

This fundraising event will benefit both FAM and MANA and the important work they do towards increasing access to midwifery care through education, research, public policy and promoting equity in maternity care.

We leave from 100 Aquarium Dock Way, please arrive at 6:30pm. Tickets are $100 per person, including the boat ride, finger food, and fun. Cash bar on board. Space is limited and the boat is filling up so order your tickets early!

Pitfalls During Resuscitation of the Newborn in the OOH Setting: Key Failures in Neonatal Resuscitation and How to Prevent Them

Presented by Karen Strange at #MANACAM17

She focuses on what gets missed, what is misunderstood and the role that fear and panic plays. In this lecture, Karen sheds light on the most common failures and misconceptions that come up in neonatal resuscitation. She’ll explain the key failures as well as the key components to successfully breathing for a newborn. You’ll leave her lecture feeling a new sense of clarity and deep confidence in how you respond to babies at birth. Learn more and register here.

Learn ALSO at #MANACAM17 Post-Conference

Complete the online portion before Nov 6

Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) is an evidence-based, interprofessional, multidisciplinary training program that equips the entire maternity care team with skills to effectively manage childbirth emergencies. Originally designed for low resource settings, ALSO is an American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) certificate course and is accepted towards receiving the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) Bridge Certificate.

Sarita Bennett has been an instructor for over 15 years and says, "I have watched the course change format from a three-day live course into the newly available format which includes an online module followed by a one-day live event. We are excited to be offering this blended ALSO Course for the first time through the 2017 MANA/CAM Conference as a post-conference offering on November 6, 2017."

After registering (cost=$250) through the #MANACAM17 conference registration, learners will receive access to the online portion of the course. This can be completed at the learner's convenience, but must be complete prior to November 6, 2017. Students registered for ALSO must download a certificate of completion of the online portion and bring the certificate to the course on Nov 6.

At the in-person event on Monday, November 6, we will provide multiple hands-on opportunities for learners to practice their skills and apply what they learned. Teams will rotate through interactive group case study workstations and skills stations, with simulated hands-on group testing scenarios presented throughout the day. For more information contact Sarita Bennett, course director.
