Fall Nanotechnology Events Introduce Big Research Ideas to Attendees

Professor Julia Greer  IEN hosted 2 large Fall nanotechnology themed events, drawing big crowds and showcasing even bigger research idea.  On September 6th the 2019 annual User Science and Engineering Review (USER) Day hosted more than 80 attendees and featured a keynote lecture by Julia Greer, Professor of Materials Science, Mechanics, and Medical Engineering at CalTech. Professor Greer’s discussion, “Materials by Design: Three-Dimensional (3D) Nano-Architected Meta-Materials” was a fascinating look at her laboratory team’s research into the fabrication of micro- and nanoarchitected materials and their resultant mechanical, thermal and electrochemical properties.  Her teams use of 3D lithography, nanofabrication, and additive manufacturing (AM) techniques allows for precise nanoarchitectures and paves the way to developing lightweight and resilient new materials for applications ranging from nano-electronic and photonic device development, biomedical devices and manufacturing processes.

Professor Greer’s keynote was followed by presentations from three IEN facility users in varied disciplines. Ting Wang, Ph.D. candidate in Civil and Environmental Engineering, presented “Rapid Determination of the Electroporation Threshold for Bacteria Inactivation Using a Lab-on-a-Chip Platform”. Katie Young, a Materials Science and Engineering Ph.D. candidate, spoke on “The Impact of Defect Density, Grain Size, and Cu Orientation on Thermal Oxidation of Graphene-Coated Cu” and Ph.D. candidate in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Yamin Zhang discussed “Zinc Anode Design for Rechargeable Aqueous High-Energy Zn-Air Batteries”.

A reception and poster session followed the lectures, with 21 presentations from facility users. 4 Best Presentation Awards were distributed at the conclusion of the reception. The IEN team congratulates the session winners for their excellent presentations.

On October 10th, over 100 attendees joined us for the Fall 2019 NanoFANS Forum, this session focused on the topic of flexible and wearable electronics for healthcare applications. Professor Suresh Sitaraman (ME) is the lead of the Flex@Tech research team and kicked off the seminar with Wearable Electronics: State of the Art and Challenges”. Professor  W. Hong Yeo (ME) discussed Wireless, Stretchable Hybrid Electronics for Smart and Connected Physiological Monitoring, with a particular emphasis on pediatric healthcare applications.  Muneeb Zia (Research Engineer; GT) and Bryce Chung (Research Engineer; Emory) teamed up to present their research, 3D Multi-electrode Arrays Fabricated on Flexible Substrate Enabled Single-Unit Recordings of Muscle Activity in a single lecture slot. The day’s series was capped by a presentation from Professor Omer Inan (ECE) Wearable Joint Health Assessment with Acoustic Emission and Bioimpedance Spectroscopy Sensing. After the lectures, guests were invited to tour the IEN fabrication cleanroom and characterization facilities, supported by the NSF and open for use by the academic and industrial research community.

Bakir Chosen for Dan Fielder Professorship

Carl Li, winner of the ASCENT Best Poster Award 2019Muhannad Bakir has been appointed as the Dan Fielder Professor in the Georgia Tech School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), effective September 1, 2019. 

After graduating from Georgia Tech with his Ph.D. in ECE in 2003, Bakir worked as a research engineer in the Microelectronics Research Center/Nanotechnology Research Center until 2010 and then joined ECE as an associate professor. In 2016, he was promoted to the rank of professor. 

Bakir leads the Integrated 3D Systems Group, consisting of nine Ph.D. students and one research engineer who explore the design, fabrication, and characterization of 3D electronic systems and advanced interconnect networks. To date, he has graduated 13 Ph.D. students and two M.S. students. Bakir and his research group have received 30 conference and student paper awards, and his group was also awarded the 2014 and 2017 Best Paper Awards for the IEEE Transactions on Components, Packaging, and Manufacturing Technology

Azadeh Ansari has been appointed as the Sutterfield Family Junior Professor in the Georgia Tech School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), effective September 1, 2019. 

Ansari joined the ECE faculty in August 2017 after working as a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Physics at Caltech. She is a member of the nanotechnology and the electronic design and applications technical interest groups. Ansari currently advises six graduate students who work in the fields of nano/microelectromechanical systems (N/MEMS), nonlinear mechanical frequency combs, radio frequency acoustic devices, and micro-robotics.

"This work reports fundamental strategies to design an ergonomic, portable EEG [electroencephalography] system for a broad range of assistive devices, smart home systems and neuro-gaming interfaces," explained study co-author Woon-Hong Yeo, an assistant professor at Georgia Tech. Vertical GaN Power Devices: Research Advances and Navy Applications - Travis J. Anderson and Jennifer Hite, U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, DC

Wide bandgap semiconductors such as SiC and GaN represent the next-generation materials for high performance medium voltage and high voltage power switch technology. Such devices have a wide range of immediate Naval applications, such as high-power satellite communications and radar, unmanned underwater and aerial vehicles, ship drive components, and hybrid vehicle inverters. Vertical SiC power device technology has matured rapidly over the past two decades, owing to advances in substrates, a fundamental understanding of epitaxial growth to eliminate performance-limiting defects, as well as device design breakthroughs. This has enabled breakthroughs in highly integrated module design for medium voltage power conversion with switching frequency >100 kHz. In parallel, lateral GaN-based high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) technology has been highly successful for RF power amplifiers and is well positioned to supersede GaAs-based microwave circuits. Recently, GaN-based vertical and lateral power devices have attracted significant interest due to promising device results coupled with progress in native substrate, epitaxial growth, and processing technology developments. This seminar will present an overview of the GaN power device effort at NRL. This research has three primary focus areas – 1) characterization of substrate materials and homoepitaxial layers used for drift regions of power devices identify appropriate specifications and benchmark performance, 2) process module development, particularly for selective area doping by ion implantation, and 3) assess the performance of basic device structures such as vertical GaN junction barrier Schottky (JBS) diodes, Schottky barrier diodes (SBDs), and PiN diodes with implanted junction termination extension (JTE) as well as conduct reliability assessments to identify and mitigate performance limiting defects.

Abstract: Directed assembly, crystallization and microphase separation have played a central role in the development of modern electronics and energy materials. Recent years, printed electronics based on semiconducting molecular systems have emerged as a new technology platform that promise to revolutionize the electronics, clean energy and medical industry. In contrast to traditional electronic manufacturing that requires high temperature and high vacuum, these new electronic materials can be solution printed at near ambient conditions to produce flexible, light-weight, biointegrated forms at low-cost and high-throughput. However, it remains a central challenge to control the morphology of semiconducting molecular systemsacross length scales. The significance of this challenge lies in the order of magnitude modulations in device performance by morphology parameters across all length scales.
