Supporters Newsletter - September 2014

Did you know that it was 39 years ago on 12 August, that Sir John Walker broke the world record of 3 mins 50 sec mark for the mile in Gothenburg, Sweden. He did it with a time of 3:49.4. Fast eh!   Time certainly does fly by, and here at FYFOD we cannot believe that it is September and we will be on the downhill march to Christmas.
Tina finishes 4th at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games
Siositina (Tina) Hakeai one of the Throw for Gold Programme's inaugural athletes competed last month at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth in Discus, finishing fourth with an outstanding throw of 58.67m.  Well done Tina, we are so very proud of you.
BNZ Closed for Good
For the past 5 years, BNZ Bank have been closing their branches for a whole day so staff can volunteer their time working on local community projects.  We are very lucky this year to have had staff from the BNZ assisting with our Primary Sport Programme.  Thanks BNZ
Local Boards – Supporting Primary Sport
We have been very fortunate to have the support of two Auckland Council Local Boards – Mangere/Otahuhu and Papatoetoe/Otara, who have provided funding for our Primary Sport programme.  These funds will help over 10,000 kids become more involved in sport.

Community Swim Holiday Programme

Find Your Field of Dreams delivered a comprehensive holiday programme for high performing students. This program aims to teach children the many advantages to being able to swim – from joining a learn to swim programme, pursuing swimming as a sport to having a go at other water sports.

The swim instructors, who have all trained and qualified with Swimgym Swim School, ran the Holiday programme at the Papatoetoe pools.

Out of 5,600 students 22 swimmers were selected and brought in for a series of lessons on
  • Competitive swimming skills which include stroke analysis, starts, dives and turns
  • First Aid – from basic bandaging to CPR
  • Water Safety – using rescue tubes, tows, the importance of and using lifejackets, swimming in clothes, deep water experience and boat safety. Survival skills as provided by Water Safety New Zealand.
  • Flippa Ball – a modified version of Water Polo for primary school children.
  • Synchronized Swimming
With this programme, we are hoping to show the children the skills that make it possible to reach the top in swimming – in fact, one of our former instructors, Ewan Jackson and fellow HPK Swim Club member, Corey Main, local Manurewa boys,  represented New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland in July making it to the finals of their events.  Well done guys.
