THROW FOR GOLD
The Throw for Gold team out did themselves yet again at the North Island Secondary Schools Competition at Mt Smart (Auckland) in March, achieving:
10 Gold, 4 Silver, 2 Bronze and obtaining 2 records
One of the records broken was in the Women Intermediate Shot where the record was held by Valerie Adams, NZ World and Olympic Champion, with the distance of 15.20m. Throw for Gold athlete Maddison Wesche (pictured) on her second attempt reached 15.08m and followed up on her third attempt with a record throwing 15.35m eclipsing Valerie’s record by 15 cm. The Chief Judge having Valerie's mobile number contacted her immediately by text to advise that her record was finally broken and the text received back from Valarie was “records are made to be broken and it could not have been done by a more deserving athlete”
Maddison will now compete for New Zealand at the World Under 18's Athletic Championships in Columbia in July. She will follow in the footsteps of other Throw for Gold athletes Siositina Hakeai and Sam Ulufonua who also competed at the World Championships in previous years.
Two of the gold medals obtained by the team were in the Junior Boys and Girls Shot – thus continuing the history of the Throw for Gold focus in finding/ training and producing future champion sports people. Well done team!
