2015 is vanishing before our eyes and already so much has happened, especially the wonderful World Cup Cricket tournament that certainly kept the country buoyed with great excitement, thanks Black Caps!
Here at FYFOD we have also been busy with our programmes and other events, which we would like to, share an update with you.
The Throw for Gold team out did themselves yet again at the North Island Secondary Schools Competition at Mt Smart (Auckland) in March, achieving:

10 Gold, 4 Silver, 2 Bronze and obtaining 2 records
One of the records broken was in the Women Intermediate Shot where the record was held by Valerie Adams, NZ World and Olympic Champion, with the distance of 15.20m.  Throw for Gold athlete Maddison Wesche (pictured) on her second attempt reached 15.08m and followed up on her third attempt with a record throwing 15.35m eclipsing Valerie’s record by 15 cm. The Chief Judge having Valerie's mobile number contacted her immediately by text to advise that her record was finally broken and the text received back from Valarie was “records are made to be broken and it could not have been done by a more deserving athlete”
Maddison will now compete for New Zealand at the World Under 18's Athletic Championships in Columbia in July. She will follow in the footsteps of other Throw for Gold athletes Siositina Hakeai and Sam Ulufonua who also competed at the World Championships in previous years.
Two of the gold medals obtained by the team were in the Junior Boys and Girls Shot – thus continuing the history of the Throw for Gold focus in finding/ training and producing future champion sports people.   Well done team!
Another successful FYFOD Leadership Day was led by Dr Ralph Pim, who is an inspirational teacher and known as a dynamic team builder who spent many years working as Professor of Physical Education & Director of Competitive Sports, with the US Military Academy - West Point.  Students were involved in numerous exercises to encourage team building and confidence.
Feedback received: “Our students really enjoyed it and presented it to their fellow sports leaders this morning (with enthusiasm)” – James Cook High and from Southern Cross Campus “I appreciate the support in encouraging “others” to speak. I know our students left the van feeling positive. AWESOME was even called out!”
We are delighted that the Joyce Fisher Charitable Trust has committed for another 3 years to support our Primary Sport Programme.
Another wonderful day was put on for FYFOD at the Whitford Golf Club by our friends BNZ Partners South Auckland. No one managed to win the fabulous Honda CRV Sport that was put up for the hole in one on the 9th hole by Honda New Zealand. Many dreamed (like the chap pictured) that they would win it though! Thanks to all the players, sponsors, Honda NZ and especially BNZ Partners South Auckland.  We were delighted to receive $16,556 from the day towards our Community Swim Programme.
On Sunday 29th March FYFOD held the John Walker Find Your Field of Dreams Foundation 5 km Fun Run. The event was run as part of the 2015 Barfoot & Thompson World Triathlon Auckland weekend, instead of the Queen Street Golden Mile.
This new event for 2015 took runners on a comfortable flat course, the same run course that the Sprint Tri followed and the glory of the fun run was that runners were able to finish right down in the heart of the waterfront, lapping up the blue carpet finish chute of the Elite course!
FYFOD has been lucky to be chosen for this year’s Z Energy - Good in the Hood and is one of 4 groups that Z Lakewood Corner, Manukau is supporting.  So if you happen to be driving out in Manukau and running low of petrol, why not pop in and vote for us.  That means we will receive a share of the money — how much depends on your votes!  Good in the Hood runs for the month of May.
A 3 year commitment has also been made by the Potter Masonic Trust to support not just Community Swim programme but also to run our Primary Sport programme at BLENNZ (Blind Learning Education Network New Zealand) – Homai Campus.  We are really excited to be continuing this partnership with the Potter Masonic Trust.
Along with the 3 year commitments received from the Joyce Fisher Charitable Trust and the Potter Masonic Trust, we are really grateful for the continued support of the other wonderful funders who have provided grants over the past few of months, including The Southern Trust, Dragon Community Trust, Endeavour Community Foundation, North & South Trust and The Lion Foundation who have all supported our Community Swim programme.  Thank you also to Grassroots Trust supporting our Secondary Sport programme,  Four Winds Foundation’s ongoing support of Primary Sport and The Trusts Community Foundation for coming onboard to support our new West Auckland programme - Throw for Gold & Lift for Gold West.  We will tell you more about the West programmes in our next newsletter.
We were also delighted to receive a donation from the Auckland Sunday Football Association.
FYFOD supported by Honda New Zealand are hosting a fundraiser breakfast at the Aotea Centre on Wednesday 12th August 2015 to celebrate Sir John Walker breaking the 3 min 50 sec barrier for the mile 40 years ago in Gothenberg Sweden.  Sir Ralph Norris will be speaking as will other notable personalities.
