Greetings from UK Elder Care!

UK Elder Care Blog by Terri Weber
Caregiving - "Expect the Unexpected"
A truism in caregiving is “expect the unexpected." Being prepared and feeling a readiness for what lies ahead is an important caregiving tenet. As our older loved ones age and lose their physical and mental acuity we need to learn what resources and services are available to help make our caregiving role more manageable.

UK Elder Care can help. We are hosting a
Senior Resource Fair on Friday, November 18, 2016 at the Hilary J. Boone Center from 11:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. The Senior Resource Fair will have more than 40 exhibitors who can provide information on in-home care, senior housing, health care, financial support, transportation services and more to help you in your caregiving role. Whether you are noticing changes now in your loved one or just want to be prepared for the future please join us for this free event.

2016-17 Central Kentucky Pathways Resource Guide
The Central Kentucky Pathways Resource Guide is a comprehensive reliable listing of resources and services for older adults, adults with disabilities, their families and caregivers that serve the Bluegrass Region. If you would like a copy of the 2016-17 guide, please click here. Resource guides will be mailed the week of November 14.
Medicare Open Enrollment
Don't forget that Medicare Open Enrollment runs from October 15 - December 7. If your older loved one has Medicare and Medicare D (prescription coverage) or a Medicare C (Advantage) plan now is the time to review their current coverage and cost. You can compare the current plan to other plans by using the Plan Finder tool at www.medicare.gov . The Medicare Plan Finder tool compares plans based on the drugs your loved one is currently taking, the pharmacy they go to, and the drug cost. You can also speak with and enroll in a new plan by calling a Medicare representative at 800-MEDICARE.

You can also speak with the folks at
SHIP, Kentucky’s State Health Insurance assistance Program. The SHIP representatives provide information, counseling and assistance to seniors and their families/caregivers regarding health care insurance. This service is provided at no charge.
You can speak with a Bluegrass area SHIP representative by calling:
Hotline: (866)-516-3051
Toll-free: (800) 928-4556
Phone: (859) 233-4556
Or find a Kentucky SHIP representative by calling (877) 293-7447.

Representatives from the Bluegrass SHIP Office will be available at the upcoming
UK Elder Care Senior Resource Fair.

Please note that the above information is for those who are covered by a regular Medicare and Medicare D (prescription coverage) plan or a Medicare C (Advantage) plan. This is not intended for those covered by a UK retiree health or prescription plan.

What it Really Means to Hold Space for Someone
Holding space means we are willing to walk alongside another person in whatever journey they're on without judging them, making them feel inadequate, trying to fix them, or trying to impact the outcome. When we hold space for other people, we open our hearts, offer unconditional support, and let go of judgement and control. Read complete article here

U.S. Just Made It a Lot Less Difficult to Sue Nursing Homes
The federal agency that controls more than $1 trillion in Medicare and Medicaid funding has moved to prevent nursing homes from forcing claims of elder abuse, sexual harrassment and even wrongful death into the private system of justice known as arbitration. The system has helped the nursing home industry reduce its legal costs, but it has stymied the families of nursing home residents from getting justice, even in the case of murder.
