Tire Rack Street Survival

Saturday, March 14, 2020
Dakota County Technical College, Rosemount, MN

Exclusively for teens and/or new drivers, Tire Rack Street Survival® is a "hands-on" driving experience in real-world situations! We use your own car to teach you about its handling limits and how you can control them. The students will become more observant of the traffic situation they find themselves in. They will learn to look far enough ahead to anticipate unwise actions of other drivers. As the students master the application of physics to drive their cars, they will make fewer unwise driving actions themselves. It's about more than driving - it's about LIVING!

Epic BMW Adventure, Part III
Petit Le Mans, O’Fest & Tail of the Dragon
By Kim Crumb
Sunday, it’s time for us to head home. We plot routes going northwest across the Blue Ridge Mountains taking us to the legendary Tail of the Dragon, America’s number one motorcycle and sports car road with 318 curves in 11 miles. The road earned its name from its curves being said to resemble a dragon's tail. I’m driving briskly down the Smoky Mountains Parkway marveling at the scenery.  Then to a twisty two-lane road to US-129 at the border of North Carolina and Tennessee. I stop at the east end, where there are small-scale retail and motel establishments.

The parking lot is full of every type of motorcycle and auto. It reminds me of doing this route ten years ago in a Porsche 911 GT3 RS. That time it was very early on a weekday summer morning with little traffic. It’s noon on Sunday now with lots of traffic. Cycle guys are hoping the sun will come out and dry the road; it’s still damp from overnight rain. This road has a canopy of trees; I think there’s little chance for totally dry pavement.

As I wait to get started, my BMW gets a lot of favorable comments about the graphics. Nearby there is an infamous tree with motorcycle parts all over it. The collection started in the 80’s by a group of Harley riders as a reminder of the road’s dangers and a monument to the many egos that wrote checks that their talent couldn’t “cash”. It’s called the “Tree of Shame”.

Finally, there’s a gap in traffic. No car has gone by for several minutes, it’s time to go! The road mostly travels through a breathtaking forested area without any cross roads and a few scenic overlooks and pull-off points along the way. Many of the turns are marked 15 mph and the nominal speed limit is 30 mph. I do these turns at 30! During the whole 11 miles, there are only three straights where I could really get going; yet I restrain my speed on these! It’s like driving the world’s longest and most challenging autocross, 318 turns, corner after corner after corner, a car “roller coaster”. I have to stop twice to “reset” the gap and avoid driving on a slower car’s rear bumper. It’s an adrenaline-pumping experience of maximum driving satisfaction in an Ultimate Driving Machine. As I head west, more fast wheels are coming from behind. Lambos, Benz, Ferrari, Corvettes, you name it. Tail of the Dragon is a major locus of car and motorcycle culture in the USA, not to be missed!

The rest of the trip home is, ahem, anti-climactic after all this.  I have time to muse about the trip, Petit Le Mans, then BMW O’Fest, and concluding by driving Tail of the Dragon. An epic BMW trip. I start making plans for next year. See you at BMW Performance Center West in Palm Springs?
About Kim John Crumb

Kim John Crumb is a professional race car driver and founding board member of Operation Wheels of Freedom Foundation (OWOF), a non-profit whose mission is to honor US Military personnel with an educational and entertaining hands-on driving program aimed at reducing motor vehicle accidents.

Kim began racing with Nord Stern Porsche club and won his first championship, the National Porsche Parade in 1984. At age 32, he sold an audio store he owned at the time and became a full-time racer. Early on, he won championships with local clubs; Land O Lakes Sports Car Club of America, Corvettes of Minnesota, and more with Nord Stern. During his career, he’s had all the major tire manufacturers, from Michelin to Pirelli as sponsors and became one of the winningest drivers and virtually unstoppable in all races he entered, PCA, SCCA, Hillclimb’s, and sprint karting. From 1995 to 2000, his minimum annual championship number was five. National titles include wins in BMWs, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche series. Among the records he still holds is the fastest lap at Brainerd International Raceway for a street-legal car on street tires (1:46.67).

He held 58 road racing championships in 2008 when he took a break from racing to focus on family and other interests. Taking the loving advice from his late wife Betty, he is once again pursuing one of his three passions, racing cars (other two being music and education). Since 2016, he added 8 more championships bringing his total to 66. His new goal is “70 by 70”; which he has two more years to achieve. Go KJC!
