News & Events, April 2020

You may have read the national BMW CCA statement regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, including the Board of Directors’ decision to prohibit all chapters and members from engaging in any BMW CCA-sponsored in-person events or gatherings from March 20 through May 1.

Our North Star BMW CCA Chapter has cancelled all events scheduled for this timeframe and we are monitoring further updates from National as well as updates from the Governor and others here in Minnesota. We remain optimistic that we can have the Adult Car Control Clinic (ACCC) at DCTC on May 9, Sommer Schnell at Brainerd International in June, and kick off Tom’s Tours in late May.

The safety and security of our guests, students, members, staff, and leaders is now and will always remain our highest priority. Our thoughts and prayers are with the thousands of Americans who have been sickened by COVID-19. Our greatest hope is that this passes quickly and that we can all resume our normal lives.

When Passion Meets Patience

When Passion Meets Patience

My passion for BMW’s started in high school when I was fortunate enough to acquire an E30 M3 that had been in a minor accident.  My parents called me while looking at another car at a local used car lot telling me about the M3 which was only $4,500 — I told them to just buy it sight unseen, and that is what kickstarted a 25+ year passion for BMWs and now a car that has over 285,000 miles on it along with evolving into a replica DTM E30 M3 race car.

Fast forward a few years when I joined the North Star Chapter of BMW CCA at one of its exceptional HPDE days at Brainerd International Raceway in 1998; that ignited my next passion road racing.  This led to a SCCA racing license, completing the One Lap of America 2000 along with racing at numerous regional and national SCCA events; which 16 years later culminated in being selected to compete in the 100th anniversary celebration of BMW at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. All with the same car I drove to high school and college and with taking my now wife on our first date back in 1996.  Speaking of my beautiful wife, I have to thank her for sharing a mutual passion for cars along with allowing me to continue racing my beloved M3 even as our three kids cheer me on at the many vintage events we have been fortunate enough to attend over the years as my car has gotten older and more valuable it is becoming a rare sight to see at the track anymore let alone driven in real anger as they were originally meant to be…

What does all of this history with my car have to do with patience?  Well it is a perfect word to describe my vision for my car and being patient with slowly building a replica DTM race car by sourcing as many original or reproduction parts as I could afford and find over the years.  So when the time came to upgrade the outdated bolt in roll cage that my car was seriously outperforming to one inspired by the original DTM roll cage, I was fortunate to connect with Brian and Gary from Patience Metal Fab in Minnesota.  They have an unbelievable passion for perfection and exceptional skills at building roll cages.  They both were very excited to take on my project and even helped repair some of the original accident damage that had never been repaired to true OEM standards which they were able to do.

Patience Metal Fab was started in 2015 when the life of dealership technicians as our side gig of motorsports fabrication really started to take off. Having worked as technicians the previous 9 years, one of them being with BMW, they really developed a service no one else was offering. They jokingly refer to it as "Fab-technicians" or "Mechanical Fabricators". The ability to not specialize in one aspect of a vehicle, but as a whole. Being able to see a project from concept to completion is quite unique while having the technical ability to handle disassembly, fabrication, and final reassembly. Most people wouldn't expect your average welder to be comfortable in dealing with these high end cars.

They applied the dealership mentality of customer service and attention to detail to the fabrication side and truly developed a service no one else was offering.  Complete bumper to bumper Motorsport Fabrication from certified Roll cages to custom sheet metal work, forced induction plumbing, general maintenance to the ever so famous "E46 RACP repair" that they have become known for a true solution to the problem. Their familiarity with the BMW platform has given them the ability to perform this repair when no other body shop/performance shop in town will offer. Brian remembers inspecting these cars in the late 2000s when the recall first came out and thought to himself, this is a money maker.

Fast forward to 2020 when they were introduced to my DTM inspired E30 M3 that needed some serious safety protection. While building the fully TIG welded roll cage, they took cues from the DTM E30 M3 factory race cars, and integrated them into this build. Tying the rear subframe into the cage was one of them along with building the anti-intrusion bars, they hit a soft spot and fell through, literally. A serious amount of rot and rust was discovered on the driver side floor pan where the wheelhouse met the firewall. A serious concern in racing, as this area is what protects your feet.

The previous repair from many many years ago was showing its desperation for a more solid and legitimate repair. Having to custom form and bend up a partial new floor, firewall, and inside a-pillar structure was a bit of a challenge while attempting to remain OEM.

The end results pictured in this article are just a small sample of the exceptional work they are capable of doing.  So in the end my patience has aligned with others passion making it a wonderful intersection of both when you connect with people who share passion and patience, you know you can trust them with your vision…
