North Star Bavarian

News & Events, August 2020

It was a wet race with many flags, but Jesse Krohn prevailed for a third-place finish in the #24 BMW M8 on Sunday, August 2 at Road America.

What do you love about your BMW? Some people like the way BMWs drive, their excellent handling characteristics and sporty ride. Some people like the way they look, and some like the way they feel connected to the car with each steering input. And of course they are fast… and there’s a little speed racer in all of us. It may not manifest itself often for those who drive average cars, but on occasion, most people feel the need for speed. Which leads to the next question.

Have you longed for the chance to see what your BMW can really do? If you ever wanted to explore your vehicle's handling limits, become a better driver or just have fun driving a fast car, register for our “Mini Sommer Schnell” performance driving school (otherwise known as Adult Car Control Clinic) scheduled for August 23 at Dakota County Technical College.

A "performance driving school" is any course that teaches driving techniques used by race car drivers that can also be applied to everyday street driving. That’s right, you can improve your everyday driving skills too! If you have any memory of your high school driver’s education class, prepare to forget it. Performance driving school is nothing like that. All vehicles are welcome, BMW “X”, “Z”, “M”, “# Series” or any other make and model. To learn more, take a look at the “Upcoming Events” section for details. There is something for everyone all packed into this one event: advanced drivers, novice drivers and even those who want to learn what it’s all about during a FREE 20 minute “taste of the track” trial experience

We all want to make the most of our short mid-west summer, social distancing style,  and what better way than behind the wheel of your BMW on the track, or on one of “Tom’s Tours” or maybe ogling over another’s favorite motor vehicle during a local car show. This month, two North Star Sponsors, Eurotech and AutoMotorPlex are holding car shows on both east and west sides of the Twin Cities.

These events are brought to you through our strong relationships with Sponsors, local businesses, and many volunteers offering countless hours of their time, passion and energy. Our feature article this month recognizes one such person who epitomizes what it means to be a lifetime volunteer and “Friend of North Star BMW CCA”.

Most of all we remain dedicated to helping you enjoy your BMW and all that is great about the people, places and life around Minnesota and surrounding areas.

North Star Mini Summer Schnell 2020

Sunday, August 23, 2020
Dakota County Technical College, Rosemount, MN

If you ever wanted to explore your BMW’s handling limits, become a better driver or just have fun driving a fast car, register for this “Mini Sommer Schnell” performance driving school (otherwise known as Adult Car Control Clinic) scheduled for August 23 at Dakota County Technical College.

This school teaches driving techniques used by race car drivers that can also be applied to everyday street driving. That’s right, you can improve your everyday driving skills too! There is something for everyone all packed into this one event: advanced drivers, novice drivers and even those who want to learn what it’s all about during a FREE 20 minute “taste of the track” trial experience. All vehicles are welcome, BMW “X”, “Z”, “M”, “# Series” or any other make and model.

This is considered a “low speed” event so convertibles are permitted and helmets are not required. It is a tight and technical track, so you can have plenty of fun without Brainerd International Raceway (BIR) type speeds!

Course Highlights:
  • LANE CHANGE. Students explore how a car handles changes in direction, as their vehicle’s weight shifts through a series of left to right turns. Avoid hitting cones, and you’ll win the day.
  • BRAKING. Learn to brake hard from higher speeds while navigating a corner. Sounds easy: it isn’t. But our instructors will give you pointers throughout.
  • HANDLING COURSE. Students will get an overall feel for their vehicles as they drive through our handling course. Developing a feel for the limit of traction while accelerating, braking and cornering, it’s an exercise aimed at overall car control.
  • WET SKID PAD. A skid pad offers up the perfect spot to learn how to handle your car at the limit of grip. You’ll learn to feel when the car starts to slip and how to control it through a drift.

Registration is required for either of these two experiences:
  • The first is a free “taste of the track” where you will be paired with an instructor, receive a briefing on driving “basics”, and have 20 minutes on-track to drive the course. This experience is for those who want to learn more about the dynamics of their vehicle, breaking techniques, and cornering but not commit to a full day
  • The second is a traditional full day Adult Car Control course that includes a combination of classroom instruction and on-track driving instruction at a reduced price of $75! There will be two run groups; one for novice and another for those more experienced.

This event will be minimal contact and follow COVID-19 guidelines, meaning social distancing will be enforced, wearing a mask while indoors is a must, and all instruction will occur outside of the car. It will look and feel a bit different from normal but everyone will have a ton of fun. We ask that and not come if you have any symptoms of COVID-19 and COVID-19 related cancellations will be refunded fully.

More details for those who register will be shared in the days prior to the event. We look forward to seeing you there!

Volunteer Opportunities

North Star BMW CCA has a reputation for well-organized fun driving schools. There are three types: Teen Street Survival Schools, Adult Car Control Clinics, and our signature high-performance driving event (HPDE) Sommer Schnell at Brainerd International Raceway (BIR). There are two volunteer opportunities, one to coordinate the Adult Car Control Clinics at Dakota County Technical Center (DCTC) and another to coordinate the annual HPDE event at BIR. Planning for 2021 begins this fall so it is a perfect time to get involved and continue the legacy of helping our members enhance their BMW experience through education.

Both roles have similar characteristics as far as responsibilities go, however, BIR is more complex to manage and requires more people and a longer lead time to plan and execute.

Here is more information on each role with key activities and skills to be successful.

  • Set up Motorsports Registration with information for events

  • Coordinate volunteers to work the event
  • Partner with the Chief Driving Instructor who trains and gets instructors to the events
  • Update and send periodic communications to participants and instructors
  • Set up Motorsports Registration with information for events
  • Coordinate with BIR staff to schedule the event and finalize the contract

Friend of North Star BMW CCA Honoree
Tony Stoy

By Rick Paukert

“Find a job you love doing, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.”
Perhaps no one epitomizes this more than Friend of North Star BMW CCA Honoree, Tony Stoy.

To be honored as a Friend of BMW CCA, a member has to demonstrate:
  • Outstanding enthusiasm, passion, and dedication to the Club
  • A significant investment of time, talent, and energy
  • Efforts to improve and enhance the Club experience
Throughout his life, Tony followed his passions and released his creative and constructive spirit to the betterment of those around him.  Tony’s early professional career had him working in the restaurant industry in his home state of Maine where he began to develop his cooking skills.  His pursuit of excellence led him to New Orleans where he worked as a sous chef at some of the French Quarter’s most prestigious restaurants.  Tony even has his own successful hot sauce business that features several tasty innovative flavors. However, Tony’s passion for creating and building things with his hands soon lead him in another direction.

Grocery getting errands in his father’s BMW 535, sparked a passion for machines, mechanics, and creativity.  Soon Tony had his own BMW 635CSi and was on his way to a collection of BMWs.  Not content to sit on the sidelines, Tony began working at a BMW performance shop working on their race cars.  Desire to continue developing his skills sent him to UTI Automotive Technician Training and onto the BMW Service Technician Education Program.  After graduation from BMW STEP, Tony secured a position at Motorwerks BMW in Bloomington, MN.  His vision to excel at large, complex projects has helped him advance to his current position as Shop Foreman, however, he still enjoys the Zen of methodically rebuilding an engine start to finish.

Today you will find Tony supporting North Star BMW CCA in a multitude of ways; hosting BMW Tech Forums, providing BMW CCA member discounts for Motorwerks service, instructing at driver education events, offering free tech inspections and track-side support for North Star event at Brainerd International Raceway, and even donating gracious baskets of his Isabel Street Heat Hot Sauce for the North Star Winter Dinner.  It's hard to find a North Star member that Tony hasn't helped in some way.

Tony’s best attributes are his generosity with his time and sharing his vast BMW knowledge.  He genuinely likes helping people.  This is what makes Tony so valuable to BMW CCA and so deserving of this honor and recognition.  If you see Tony at an event, please thank him for his contribution to the Club. You’ll know him because his car is the one with hot sauce pictured on the side, but he'll likely be nearby helping someone else with their car.
Thank you, Tony!
