Director's Message

The past couple months have been an exciting time for our office.
In March, ESCAP held a 10-day legal training workshop in Beijing, China to give DPRK officials an opportunity to learn about the legal and policy frameworks necessary for attracting foreign investment. ESCAP East and North-East Asia (ENEA) Office was responsible for organizing the content of the training and the actual roll-out of the event.
In April, ESCAP Executive Secretary and UN Under-Secretary-General, Dr. Shamshad Akhtar, visited Korea again and met with Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se and other Ministers. During her visit to Korea, she signed a memorandum of understanding with the Korea Transport Institute President, Dr. Lee Chang-woon. The new partnership will boost cooperation in areas of sustainable urban and rural transport as well as intermodal transport and logistics systems for better regional connectivity.
In the busy week that Dr. Akhtar had spent in Korea, she spoke at the Development Cooperation Forum held in Songdo during 8-9 April, and at the High Level Expert and Leaders Meeting on Water and Sanitation in Seoul on 10 April.  Dr. Akhtar then joined the visiting Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Jan Eliasson, in all of his bilateral meetings with the President of the Republic of Korea and other senior ministers.  Together they also participated in the Opening of the World Water Forum and the meetings of the UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Group on Water and Sanitation.
Looking ahead, I am pleased to announce that the 2015 Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific will be released on May 14th. The Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific is the annual flagship publication of ESCAP. I am confident that it will provide invaluable insight into the economic outlook on Asia-Pacific and policy recommendations to address some of the key socio-economic challenges affecting the region.
Please stay tuned for the next issue of our newsletter, which will have information about our accomplishments in the past five years since our Office opened its doors, as well as information about the visit by the UN Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon.
Thank you for your continued interest, support and partnership.  As always, we look forward to hearing from you.
