Despite his busy schedule in the Republic of Korea, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon took time to visit the ENEA Office and celebrated UN’s 70th anniversary with staff from all UN offices and international organizations located in the ROK. The ENEA Office organized and hosted a special event to commemorate the 70th anniversary.

At the ceremony, Mr. Ban stressed that the year 2015 is a crucial year for the world, as it is scheduled to adopt a new set of development agenda that will stress sustainability and equality of opportunity for all. As the new Post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals will build on the success of the Millennium Development Goals that guided UN’s efforts for a better world from 2000, the Secretary-General urged the UN staff to work harder to ensure that they successfully complete the MDGs by the end of this year. In particular, Mr. Ban urged the staff from UN and international organizations, including the Green Climate Fund and the Global Green Growth Institute, to make sure that they deliver positive results on tackling climate change, which he says is a silent crisis but is causing suffering to hundreds and millions of people around the world. (Read his message regarding the 70th anniversary of UN here.)

The Secretary-General was presented with two gifts that the ENEA Office prepared for him: a necktie and a ceramic mug both with the 70th anniversary of UN logo. The staff member who served the UN for the longest time and the youngest staff working for a UN office in the ROK were specially selected to present the gifts to the Secretary-General. In addition, he graciously signed the ENEA Office’s 5th anniversary poster titled “5 Years Connecting North-East Asia”. The poster with Mr. Ban’s autograph is now hung on the wall in the ENEA Office.
