Work and Pensions Committee launch new enquiry

The Parliamentary Work and Pensions Committee has launched a new enquiry into the employment opportunities for young people.

The Committee is inviting written submissions that provide insight into how best to support young people into work.

As well as looking for feedback on the effectiveness of the Jobcentre Plus Support for Schools programme, they are also looking for evidence of how Jobcentre Plus services for young people can be more effectively integrated with other local services, especially around education and skills.

The call for evidence is now open, and will close on 5 September 2016. For more details about the enquiry, click here.

In the spotlight - Robert Halfon MP, Apprenticeship & Skills Minister

Following the recent round of government reshuffles, GUAC is delighted to welcome Robert Halfon MP as the new Apprenticeship & Skills Minister, Department for Education.

Mr Halfon takes up the charge of  Minister of State with responsibility for skills, apprenticeships and higher education.

He lists his interests as apprenticeships, education, social action, community cohesion and technology. He is generally considered to sit to the left of his own party, and cites his support for trade union membership whilst he is also considered by many to be anti “big business”.

GUAC looks forward to engaging with Mr Halfon over the coming months.
