Maine reports 1.45 million acres of land in farms, bucking the nation's trend of declining acreage.

Dear Friends of The Maine Food Strategy,

It was so exciting to connect with more than 100 people at Briefings held in Lewiston, Portland and Caribou! Thank you to those who came to hear about the Consumer Survey and give us input on which areas you would like more information.

What’s Next?
Our next step is to take recommendations back to our Research Team at the Muskie School of Public Service. Analysts will provide a break-down of data from regions, and in some cases, counties within Maine. We’ll post this online along with the comprehensive survey results. In addition, interested groups can expect to access the full data set from the survey by the fall.

Look for this in August’s eNewsletter, or on our website under the Reports page in the coming weeks.

The Maine Food Strategy would like to thank the Aroostook Partnership for Progress, Coastal Enterprises, Inc., Good-Food Council of Lewiston-Auburn and St. Mary’s Nutrition Center for hosting our Briefings.

Breakout sessions at the Briefings enabled attendees to share resources and connect with each other.

News from the Steering Committee

Our Steering Committee is energized after meeting July 9 in Bangor. Committee members are finalizing draft goals and indicators that will serve as the basis for discussion with other interested parties and stakeholders over the coming months.

A public release for input is anticipated later this year. Key to the strategy is identifying “levers” that will make the greatest difference in strengthening the food system in Maine.

We applaud our Steering Committee for their thoughtful planning and hard work during this essential phase of the Initiative’s development.

Stay tuned for more details in the coming months!

We hope you are enjoying a bountiful Maine summer!

Best regards,

Barbi Ives & Tanya Swain
