New Podcast: Impossible Choices

Most organizations do not work for the day that they are no longer needed. But that’s precisely the goal of the Alameda County Community Food Bank who serves 1-in-5 residents of Alameda County.

In this podcast episode, we discuss "food insecurity" - the lack of access to affordable, nutritious groceries. We delve into how poverty often forces people to make impossible choices, what constitutes a "complete grocery basket," and how the economic recovery has not lifted up our most vulnerable families, seniors, and neighbors.

We celebrated the groundbreaking and wall-raising of Camphora Apartments near Soledad last spring.

We are pleased to share with you that the new community of 44 affordable rental apartment homes for farmworkers and their families is almost completed.

GOVERNOR BROWN RELEASES proposed 2016-17 Budget Draft

Sadly, the Governor does not propose any additional investment in affordable housing. This is not altogether surprising given that he vetoed in October two affordable housing tax credit bills that had overwhelming bipartisan support.

The question remains how the state will address the alarming rise in housing costs. Bay Area rents went up another 10% this past year.

SAN JOSE APPOINTS JACKY MORALES-FERRAND AS NEW HOUSING DIRECTOR

At the end of last year, the City of San Jose appointed Jacky Morales-Ferrand as its new housing director. Eden congratulates Jacky and we look forward to continuing to work with her!

She had served as interim director for the past year following the retirement of Leslye Corsiglia (who now heads the new SV@Home).
