July 12th is the first ever Chicago Independent Bookstore Day! At our store in University Village, you can come hear readings from Joe Meno, Eula Biss, Eric May and more! Plus, put together a print designed exclusively for us by Lilli Carre when you visit each of the nine participating bookstores to collect puzzle pieces. Visit for more details about all the participating stores, and look out for an email from us with a full line-up, sale, and give-away info!
July 11th, 7pm
Five Hundred Sirens
with Jay Shearer
Join us for a reading and discussion with Jay Shearer, a finalist for the 2013 Flannery O'Connor prize in short fiction. Shearer's debut novel is set in Humboldt Park, where a fairly detestable narrator makes razor-sharp observations on modern urban life.
July 20th, 4pm
Buddhist Boot Camp
with Timber Hawkeye
Non-judgement day is near! Timber Hawkeye joins us to share his unique blend of humor and enlightenment. Watch his TedX talk here.
Join us every Friday at 10 am in University Village for Children's Readings!
July 24th, 7pm
Saintly Sex
with Dr. John McHale
Saintly Sex takes a bold, critical look at the Catholic Church
, calling for reform in gender-based practices.

The third Friday each month at 6pm, Bad Grammar Theater brings readings from Chicago's established and rising stars in genre fiction- the best in horror, fantasy, noir and more!
Thank you for your support! We've been working hard to bring literary and community events into our stores, take our books out to meet the world at book fairs and other off-site happenings, and generally spread witty erudition across the internet, and we want to share it with you because we like you. And we'll still like you if you unsubscribe!

Powell's Bookstores, Chicago has been recycling ideas in Chicago to the world for the over 40 years. We have two independent retail stores, in Hyde Park and University Village, each with well over a quarter million quality used, rare, and discounted books. We primarily specialize in academic and scholarly books, such as ancient and medieval history, philosophy, and theology, but also have extensive general interest sections, including fiction, children’s, poetry, performing arts, art and photography, and cookbooks.
