It's the year 2054, and Next Wave is a black organisation that has taken over the world.
Unrestrained Western physical and power structures have collapsed from the constant pressure of change. As the climate apocalypse looms and economic income for artists becomes non-existent, a team of super-warrior artists steps in to re-centre ways of knowing, being, and healing through the celebration of creativity.
Visioned by our Producers-in-Residence Moorina Bonini and Kalyani Mumtaz after diving into the Next Wave archive and yarning with each previous Next Wave Director, Next Wave's 35th Birthday Party line up features alumni and friends Timmah Ball, Megan Cope, Mandy Nicholson, Steven Rhall, Tracey Rigney, Diimpa, Lady Lash, P-Unique and River Boy with DJs General Feelings B2B Crdio and Kōtare B2B KYAANZ.
Momentum happens Saturday November 2, at the Brunswick Mechanics Institute. You're all invited, literally everyone. It's FREE and it's going to be $I(c)K!
Love,
Roslyn
Director/CEO

Make or Break
|
We are Bec and Connie, and together we are Make or Break. Our projects explore social, structural and political situations in collaboration with an audience, and right now we’re thinking about how citizens might reinsert themselves into decision-making processes within a capital “D” Democracy. We are working out how to collectively share and use practical (and sometimes subversive) skills and tools. We are learning things we never thought we would, like how to code and make robots that collect information on behalf of citizens. Our inner nerds are very satisfied… and we get to have great conversations with a bunch of interesting humans!

Alex Last
|
I'm Alex. I live and work on the traditional lands of the Muwinina in nipaluna (Hobart). I like to learn about the world via my arts practice, and I think this didactic approach carries through into the final shape of what I produce. I have focused recently on avian lifeways and modes of perception, and my current work continues this while pushing harder to incorporate the always looming human relationship. I'm exploring themes of ecological responsibility, colonial meddling, restorative justice and multi-species sociality, blending together different realms of knowledge and truth-making, and inviting the audience into this mess as a deliberative force.

VIC: THE END/FUTURE OF HISTORY
Fri 1 Nov – Sat 14 Dec
|
Curated by Next Wave alumni, Phuong Ngo, The End / Future of History sees contemporary artists examine how rights are simultaneously upheld and violated by government. In an international system that has been dominated by Western ideology, a fundamental flaw exists with the administering of rights. It is a system where the guarantor of rights is almost always the key violator. Can governments fulfil their obligations to citizens when presented with conflicting demands?

Next Wave,
gives away —
|
An experimental program of interconnected performances exploring linguistic re-coding, tricks of the mouth, verbalism, chatter, translation, transposition, impersonation, and noise, Tricks of the Mouth draws from Liquid Architecture’s ongoing investigations into the dynamics of ventriloquism, polyphony and other multiplicities of sound and listening. It features multiple artists' works materialising in a fluid and collaborative setting over a two-hour program, staged nightly throughout the festival, including Next Wave alumni, Natasha Tontey. No two nights will be the same. We have a double pass to the Sat 26 Oct performance give away. To enter, email nextwave@nextwave.org.au with the subject line, 'tongue twisters'.
