A close up encounter.

Matuku hūrepo living in the Driftwood Eco Tours wetland sanctuary, thank you for your support!

Next time you visit you might be fortunate enough to have a close encounter with one of New Zealand's rarest birds, the nationally endangered Australasian bittern or matuku hūrepo (Maori). With wetlands in New Zealand being reduced to only 10% of their former area, birds like the bittern have been put under increasing pressure. The numbers of bittern remaining are hard to estimate due to the secretive nature of this species, however it is estimated to less than 900.

The good news is when you tour with us we plant one endemic tree into the wetland and this is where we hope these beautiful birds will soon be breeding. Thank you for supporting our environment. You are most welcome to visit the wetland by prior arrangement.
