Calling volunteers for Australia Day Expo

Can you help?

Every year the Centre participates in Australia Day Expo at the Showgrounds. We will need some volunteers for the day please. Shifts will be 2 hours.

We will need help with the following:
  • Set up marquee/table/chairs 7-8am
  • 2 hours shifts manning the stall 8am-12noon
  • packup, bring all equipment back to the Centre and pack away 12-1pm
  • If you could let Alison or myself know if you could help, we would very much appreciate it. We also were hoping to have an activity to bring people to the stall, like a quiz or competition. If you have any ideas let me know.
Please contact Alison if you are interested in helping us out on the day.

MEMBERSHIP of the Group:
· Motivated community members
· A small representation from Service providers
· Other stakeholders with an interest in the working groups.
· preferably 12 months
· Aim to attend all meetings or forward an apology.
· Support local events that contribute to connection
· Consider attending free training.

How can you get involved?
  • You can find CHASM (Compassionate Housing Affordability Solutions Maleny) on Facebook to stay informed of their progress.
  • The group wants to hear from people with suitable land willing to offer medium to long-term leases for this social enterprise.
  • People with fundraising / governance experience are also encouraged to get in touch to join this exciting initiative.
  • The group has identified the need to increase the supply of small secondary dwellings in the township and in rural-zoned areas, to cater for low-cost housing for single parents, service workers, pensioners and low-waged people. Many landholders are unaware of changes to Council and State government regulations that allow for such an investment.
  • CHASM has researched a list of suppliers of low cost dwellings, but would like to hear from more local suppliers who would like to participate in supporting this initiative.
  • For further information please call Julia Peddie 0405 331 584.

Spare Rooms Group

Do you have spare room in your home?
Would a little income make a big difference to your lifestyle?
Or would you like help around the home?
Or perhaps  someone around in case you have a fall?
Do you have a neighbour or relative who might say yes to one of these?

There may be many people in Maleny who would answer yes to one or more of these questions, but are wary about sharing. We are the group to help!

The spare rooms group meets monthly on the second Tuesday at the Market Place Cafe at 1pm.

We are essentially a group of people with spare rooms in our homes (and mentors) who are supporting each other to provide affordable housing solutions and hosting people in our homes or spaces.

If you have spare room, or are curious about what is involved in renting out part of your property but are unsure how to go about it, please come along to our monthly get-togethers.

We can chat about drafting agreements, housesitting terms and payment and/or exchange arrangements.

Call Frances Harper for more information: Ph: 5494 3420

"We live in a biodiversity hotspot", says Spencer. "There are some 3500 plants local to the region and we're encouraging home gardeners to plant them as an alternative to the usual garden plants that become weeds in our local forests."

At this time of starting up business here in Maleny, Spencer has moved his office to be on-site in Coral Street. Take the opportunity to go along and chat. You'll get the benefit of his long history working with regeneration and the biodiversity of our local region.

Caloundra & Hinterland Family Support Programme

Sometimes families struggle with problems like financial pressures, difficulties coping with children, feeling isolated, lonely & stressed. Often parents just need someone to talk to.

Family Support is an early intervention programme that aims to improved children's development and wellbeing by supporting the capacity of those in a parenting role. Specifically working with children up to the age of 12 years, Family Support seeks to:
  • strengthen family relationships
  • support families
  • improve children's wellbeing
  • increase participation in community life to strengthen family and community functioning
If you think that you or your family, may benefit from this type of support, give Wendy a call on Mob: 0423 716 705 or Holly on 0488 000 343.

Wendy is at the MNC on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Time: 7.30 am - 12.00 midday.

Emergency Relief Story

I have lived in Maleny, with my two sons Grant and Christian for near on 15 years.

Our 1st Christmas here back there would not have been a very joyous one but for the brilliant generosity of the Neighbourhood Centre. Giving the kids toys and great food to make Christmas just terrific.

I have again 3 times since then needed their help and again they were so helpful. Not only with food, but towels,  blankets and toiletries, things that we really needed at the time.

The staff, the people who donate their time and the things folk need, when times are hard are just heaven sent!

And we love them for it!
