Maleny Neighbourhood News - Jan 2016

Hello <<First Name>>, Happy New Year! We hope that your year has started off with a flourish and that you continue to enjoy good health, and the joy of community in the months ahead.

Christmas Breakfast 2016

Many people came to help us out during the Festive Season and our Community Christmas breakfast was amazing. The welcoming party experienced many wonderful moments of Christmas joy both greeting visitors and receiving feedback as they left. Heart warming comments, awesome food, great support by volunteers and visitors and raving reviews is the best way to describe it.
At the MNC we are very aware that the festive season is not very festive for a lot of people. The desire to lift these people up was matched by many generous people donating items for gifts.
One of those people, Annie, brought a beautiful Xmas hamper to MNC and said it was donated on behalf of her mother who died this year. She used to donate a hamper to different organisations every year.
We would love to acknowledge the wonderful Maleny businesses and organisations who donated food and gifts as well as some of our staff who donated Christmas hampers.
A huge bit THANK YOU to:
  • IGA
  • Maleny Cheese
  • Maleny Dairies
  • Montville Coffee
  • Walker Farm Organics
  • Dan the Mango Man
  • PUMA - To be confirmed
  • Maple Street Coop

Having teenagers can be challenging as our children become young adults with different views on life to ours, wanting to explore the world their way or not always being able to communicate with us. It can be tough. You are not alone.
If you want to share, ask questions or just connect, come and find support with other parents in a facilitated group.

Women’s Space

March 6, 2016

The purpose of Women’s Space is to provide local women with an opportunity to share healing, knowledge and experiences with each other in order to grow cohesive and inclusive connections in our community. And by healing, we mean in the broadest sense of the word, reaching beyond healing modalities to art and creative expression, and anything in between that women love to love, and that nurtures the soul.
The event will be an all-inclusive event welcoming cultural and gender diversity and is planned to be intergenerational.

We are very excited about the programme so far! We're promoting the event from the end of January so keep an eye out for what's on and how you can participate.

We are looking for some volunteer help on the day to help manage the event so if you would love to be involved we would love to hear from you. For the roles available... read more...

Volunteer of the Month

Meryl Marshall

Floral artist extraordinaire, the Neighbourhood Centre has benefitted from Meryl’s voluntary work (and her gorgeous flowers) for some 10 years. Those beautiful flowers that we all enjoy at the front reception every Monday are a testament to her talents.  A long-term Maleny resident of 37 years, Meryl spent much of her childhood in Millmerrin on the Darling Downs.
An accomplished potter, Meryl’s pottery sales were the family’s main source of income for many years. She enjoyed participating in many exhibitions and competitions over the years and is disappointed that she lost interest in pottery on the passing of her husband. Unable to be inspired to return to pottery, Meryl took up floral art. She runs a floral art class at the MNC on the 2nd Tuesday of the month to which everyone is welcome.
The beautiful flower arrangements that adorned last year’s Women’s Space event are another example of her creativity. Meryl will be supporting the event again this year.
Meryl also produces the most beautiful hand-painted cards that she sells to raise funds for MNC at a number of events through the year.
The Hospital Auxiliary and Meals on Wheels are 2 other organisations that Meryl volunteers with.
We are very grateful for the commitment that Meryl brings to the MNC. Thank you Meryl. You are a legend!

Emergency Relief Story  Anon.

I am a middle aged woman living in a rental accommodation with my son and my son’s girlfriend. I am in the Newstart program through Centrelink and am currently studying with the hopes of getting work soon. Money is very tight and I found myself in the position of requiring assistance from the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre recently. Previously I had been borrowing money from my elderly mother which I did not want to do anymore.
The Centre was great and supplied me with some groceries and a reference to St. Vinnies for a clothing voucher. I have also signed up for budgeting counselling through the Centre.
