December 2018
Dear MNC member,
What a year it has been at MNC! As well as continuing to provide and improve on its usual established services the Centre has hosted 4 very successful events in particular in 2018 – Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, SafeTALK, RUOK day and the Maleny Youth Festival (more below). And our regular Christmas breakfast will be on again as usual on Christmas morning. We hope to see you there!
A safe Christmas and a happy new year to all.
– Karen Sheiles and Wendy Oakley, editors

A welcome grant for CHASM

CHASM are thrilled to announce that they have been successful in getting a Community Benefit grant of $30,000. The funds will go towards building or buying CHASM’s first small relocatable dwelling, which will be placed in the Maple Street Co-op back garden.
Further funds are still required to meet the total cost of the building, ground works, fees, charges and connections to services etc. CHASM is holding a range of fundraising events over the next few months including Drag Queen Bingo, to be held at the Maleny Showgrounds in March.

Maleny Innovative Housing Solutions Project – age friendly grant
The project research document was launched on 14 November at MNC. Kelli Dendle gave a brief overview of the findings including suitable housing plans to build to enable people to 'age in place'. Service providers, community groups, locals, architects, occupational therapists and Council were all part of the wide range of consultation, which took place over 12 months. Read the document.

Update: Thank you Maleny!

Thanks to some very generous people in Maleny, we have managed to raise the funds needed to commence this project. We have been very fortunate to also be given a house at a reduced market rent to start taking clients!
The head tenant has been appointed and she will move in shortly, with tenants to follow from 1st december. Thanks again to generous donors, we have most of the furniture we will need.
The Shared House project will assist women and children at risk of homelessness into a more permanent housing by offering clients 2 months housing and connecting them to the relevant support services to enable their move into more permanent housing.
MNC would be very interested in anyone having housing accommodation at a modest rental to transition these clients into, so they can remain local and keep up their connections with the local community.
Social housing provider Coast 2 Bay will be assisting MNC with support such as links to housing services and tenancy assessment criteria.
For enquiries please contact Nooreen Harris.
In 2018 the Centre hosted 4 very successful events in particular:
Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea
Hosted by MNC at The Orangery Maleny
MNC held this event on 24 May to raise money for the Cancer Council. The Orangery came on board with an offer of a lovely morning tea, with raffles and prizes given out. Guest speaker Sue Krucker spoke about her experience as a former cancer sufferer. Approximately $200 was raised for the Cancer Council.
SafeTALK:
3 hour suicide prevention training workshops
Aim: to increase suicide alertness, which will contribute to a suicide safer community. Almost 70 people participated over the year in these workshops and feedback from all participants was how empowered and confident they felt to be able to talk to someone at risk of suicide. SafeTALK is a powerful experience. You can expect to feel challenged, empowered and hopeful. Its steps provide a simple method to engage with people at risk and connect them with resources that can carry out a full-scale intervention.
Maleny Wellbeing Group meets once a month at MNC
RUOK Day
Run by Maleny Wellbeing Group
On 12 September about 50 people attended Tesch Park for a sausage sizzle and information mini-expo. The aim of the event was to promote welbeing and community connections as a means of suicide prevention. The event brought together service providers and community organisations to deliver a learning through fun morning for local community. Primary Health Network, North Coast Aboriginal Corporation for Community Health, Maleny Men's Shed,  Blackall Range Lions  were some of the services present. Sam Shepherd provided some lovely music for the morning.
Maleny Youth Festival
14 September
Every year the Maleny Flexi School and the Neighbourhood Centre partner to run the festival and over the past 2 years it has grown significantly to over 100 attendees. A lot of work by students and volunteers goes into producing the highly successful festival each year, with work starting early in the school year. This year the theme was 'Gypsy'.
