Domestic Awareness Awareness Walk

The streets of Maleny came alive when well over a hundred people turned up for the Domestic Violence Walk from Tesch Park to Maleny Neighbourhood Centre.

The group sang their way up the main street with a police escort and a variety of banners highlighting the theme, Not Ever – Say No to Domestic Violence and Say Yes to Family Peace; Aunty Beverly Hand gave an Acknowledgment of Country to begin proceedings.

Several speakers informed the gathered crowd including Superintendent Darryl Johnson, in charge of the Sunshine Coast police district. He mentioned how determined police in this area are to respond to calls to ensure everyone's safety.

Karen Marsh from Uniting Care Community spoke of working with behavioural change through counselling men and facilitating Men's groups in her current work context after having 12 years experience working with women and children in DV.

Mens group facilitator Rob Clark spoke of recognising the absolute importance of the Say No campaign while introducing the positive narrative of Say Yes as a way to support us as a community to move forward to the world we do want and highlighting the good work being done.

Robin Clayfield then led a simple ceremony involving an art instillation of crosses made by Barry Smith.

A minutes silence and the placement of flowers supported a time of remembrance and healing.

Inspirational Choir Leader Brian Martin then taught a heart opening song to accompany the walkers and off everyone went to the beat of a drum, singing, banners unfurled and T-shirts worn proudly to highlight the theme.

The event culminated with Rob Clark launching the Say Yes to Family Peace art project entitled Art for Family Peace. A seven panel wall mural on 133 canvasses was unveiled for people to then participate in creating art and conversations together in support of the positive solutions to healthy families and relationships.

"This facilitated group has been amazing for me. Not just another support group, the facilitation in this group supports new and shared knowledge and some great take away ideas, as well as allowing me to express my hurts and concerns, and have them listened to. - Anon"

The group of parents of teenagers meeting on Tuesday mornings has reached its capacity. A new group is starting on Thursdays in the evening  5.00 to 7.30pm. Please call Anne on 0490 314 011 if you are thinking of coming.

National Healing Day

At Maleny Neighbourhood Centre this year, National Healing Day was celebrated with a lovely, informal conversation lead by Aunty Bev Hand.

A simple, informal discussion between neighbours and friends. Just as it should be.

Save the Maleny Hospital

Gary Stipanov is organising this campaign to save the Maleny Hospital.

With recent suggestions by government to centralise all hospital services, it is proposed that rural hospitals such as ours may come under threat of closure.

For this reason, Gary, who also organised the successful save the hinterland bus campaign with MNC, has begun this campaign to bring to the attention of politicians, that "In this critical pre-election period, polling shows that protecting our universal healthcare system is the number one vote-changing issue for Australians."
You can contact Gary on 5429 6207.

Community Lunch Thursdays

Come and join us for a delicious lunch, meet other community members for a $5 donation.

MNC needs five volunteers each week to put on this splendid feast. The new roster is on the office door - please choose a time that suits you to help out.

Emergency Relief Supplies needed

Do you have spare blankets, quilts, towels or saucepans that are in good clean condition that you can donate to the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre?

If so, please drop in during the hours of 9am - 3pm. Thank you.

Your Local Native Nursery

For quality services, products and advice we are your one stop shop for local native plants, bush foods, timber trees, native gardens, tools and equipment for Revegetation and Bush Regeneration, nest boxes, books, DVD’s and art.

"We live in a biodiversity hotspot", says Spencer. "There are some 3500 plants local to the region and we're encouraging home gardeners to plant them as an alternative to the usual garden plants that become weeds in our local forests."

At this time of starting up business here in Maleny, Spencer has moved his office to be on-site in Coral Street. Take the opportunity to go along and chat. You'll get the benefit of his long history working with regeneration and the biodiversity of our local region.

Maleny Pearl
Connection Group

The PEARL group is continuing.  We surveyed group attendees and a common request was for the group to become social and to be based at varying locations in the community.

Please find attached the new flyer

The group has been completely rebranded and is known as Maleny Pearl Connection Group.

The Group is now more focused on socialising, getting out of the house and into the community and generally connecting with others.  This is aligned with the requests of group members.

Volunteer Profile

Margaret McKenzie

Margaret worked for 15 years in the Commonwealth Public Service in direct service and program delivery to people with a disability with the aim of helping people to access vocationally focussed rehabilitation and training assistance.

In 1996 Margaret was selected to run a pilot program in S.E. Queensland that used a brokerage model to purchase assistance for people with a disability who were ineligible to access the government's vocational employment programs.

This program sought to identify the barriers being experienced by this client group and purchase tailored solutions to enable them to gain access to vocational programs and eventually paid work.

The pilot program was so successful that it was extended for a further 3 years and Margaret was awarded an Australia Day medal for her achievements in the program. She accepted the award on behalf of the staff and team behind her that helped the program to be the success it was.

Unfortunately a change of government meant that the pilot never became a national program.

Margaret left the Commonwealth public service and went to work in State Housing where she managed a range of projects aimed at improving the delivery of housing services to those in need of housing assistance and supporting the staff involved in direct service delivery.
Margaret became involved with MNC when the Housing Conversations commenced in Sept 2015. She volunteers with the Tiny House and Spare Rooms project, as well as supporting MNC with two days of office support.
Margaret, thank you for your support and contribution to the MNC team. It’s lovely to have you here.

Caloundra & Hinterland Family Support Programme

Sometimes families struggle with problems like financial pressures, difficulties coping with children, feeling isolated, lonely & stressed. Often parents just need someone to talk to.

Family Support is an early intervention programme that aims to improved children's development and wellbeing by supporting the capacity of those in a parenting role. Specifically working with children up to the age of 12 years, Family Support seeks to:
  • strengthen family relationships
  • support families
  • improve children's wellbeing
  • increase participation in community life to strengthen family and community functioning
If you think that you or your family, may benefit from this type of support, give Wendy a call on Mob: 0423 716 705

Wendy is at the MNC on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Time: 7.30 am - 12.00 midday.

Emergency Relief Story

Peter is a pensioner who lives in Maleny with his only source of income being the aged pension. He finds this pension is, at times, insufficient to live on and uses the emergency relief at Maleny Neighbourhood Centre occasionally.
Peter has received help with basic food staples and with some cookware. He also participates weekly in the Mah Jong games weekly at the centre and finds this a valuable social networking opportunity for himself. He appreciates that there is always something for morning tea available and that means he doesn’t have to worry about lunch when he goes home.
Peter is very grateful for the help he has received from the MNC and considers the centre an excellent community facility. He especially thinks that a couple of the volunteers (Meryl and Duncan) are extremely “down to earth” and exceptional in their ability to make people comfortable. He would recommend the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre to anyone in need or to anyone who is looking for a volunteer opportunity. Peter foresees the need for himself to use the services of the MNC again and is very thankful that it is available for him.
