February 2016
Hello <<First Name>>,

You will notice with this edition that we have a new format. Our previous editor Josie Coco is moving on to other activities including organising the Women's Space (see below in Upcoming events). Our heartfelt thanks to Josie – we have really appreciated her professionalism and dedication to the newsletter over the last few years.
Wendy Oakley has volunteered to take over the newsletter from Josie as of this month – we welcome her and hope you will enjoy the new look!

The Fix It Cafe is back!

Second and fourth Thursday of the month,
9am to 2.30pm

The Fix It team is looking forward to Thursday 9 February when we will start the service for 2017 – bicycle repair, clothes mending, small appliance repair and general rehabilitation of loved items are some of the actions that we plan to be able to provide for you.
Unfortunately, not every item can be repaired – the $5 donation is for us to assess the item. If repairable, it will be done at no extra charge. Of course, an additional donation for the MNC would be welcome…
Bring your item, head off for some shopping, return for a community lunch, pick up your item and head home happy!

The training is open to all community members aged over 18 years and each participant will receive a certificate of attendance, supporting material and morning tea.

About the emergency relief service

One of the Neighbourhood Centre's main functions has always been to support members of our community who find themselves in a crisis situation. Each month we would like to share some of their stories:

"New hope for the future"

"I am new to the area being in the process of moving from further north with my two young children. I am physically disabled and will be living in my caravan. I also have a lot of difficulty reading and need help in that regard.
"Everyone at the Neighbourhood Centre has been so helpful and friendly and most of all non-judgemental towards me. I have received some emergency relief supplies, including bedding and a butane stove and gas canisters and when I get further settled I will be back for a haircut and counselling and some literacy help.
"I am so grateful that I have been able to get help here and I feel hope for the future for the first time in a long time."
Some Australia Day activities
Ceremony of remembrance of Indigenous people
Approximately 100 to 200 people attended this heartfelt ceremony at Maleny RSL on 26 January. Its purpose was to commemorate the Indigenous people who died in the defense of their land. Aunty Bev's talk and presence was moving, deeply connecting and inspirational.

Aussie Day at the Showgrounds

The Maleny Neighbourhood Centre participated in the Australia Day Expo at Maleny Showgrounds on January 26 for a fun day of activities. The stall was quite busy handing out jellybeans and sharing with locals what we do at the Centre.
We would like to thank the organisers of the event and all the volunteers that assisted with our stall on the day.

Get connected with your community!

Caloundra & Hinterland Family Support Programme

Sometimes families struggle with problems like financial pressures, difficulties coping with children, feeling isolated, lonely & stressed. Often parents just need someone to talk to.
Family Support is an early intervention programme that aims to improved children's development and wellbeing by supporting the capacity of those in a parenting role.

Specifically working with children up to the age of 12 years, Family Support seeks to:
• strengthen family relationships
• support families
• improve children's wellbeing
• increase participation in community life to strengthen family and community functioning.

If you think that you or your family, may benefit from this type of support, give Wendy a call on Mob: 0423 716 705 or Holly on 0488 000 343.
Wendy is at the MNC on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 7.30am – 12 noon
