OBI PAINTED TIE EVENING

Friday 7 July, 5.30–10pm

Have fun, paint a tie or just buy a fun tie to wear on the night...
July 2017
Hello <<First Name>>,
A little bit of everything in our newsletter this month, from our Swag Appeal for homeless people for the cold months of winter, to our Obi Art Prize celebrations (see below). This important event has attracted artworks from more than 70 artists – many from our local community but also a few entries from overseas.
And this year for the first time we are holding NAIDOC celebrations at MNC, the theme for this year being "Languages matter" (details below).
Enjoy this month's newsletter!
– Anne Delmas & Wendy Oakley, editors

Gardeners wanted

Love gardening? We are looking for volunteers specifically for our vegetable gardens. Please email  volunteer@malenync.org.au

Come to our Painted Tie event

7 July from 5.30pm at MNC

The evening is the major fundraising event for MNC and celebrates the National Obi Art Prize that was launched for the first time this year. There will be a wide range of entertainment. Guest artists will be exhibiting and contributing their works for sale during the event and include Steve Kilbey from Australian band The Church, Jandamarra Cadd, Astrid Dahland and local artist Satya Demasson. 25% of the sale of these works goes to MNC.

You can buy tickets at MNC or you can book online.

Be part of our Swag Appeal

We are doing a swag appeal for our Emergency Relief program. Especially designed to be a carry bag by day and a basic bed and shelter by night, the Street Swag was designed to be incredibly discrete so as not to identify people as homeless. The swags are made locally at Woodford Correctional Centre.
MNC has given out 5 swags to homeless local people since the beginning of the year and as the cold sets in we are expecting to be giving out more – at least 10 more by the end of the year. A swag costs $85.
If you want to support MNC to buy more swags please donate.

Movie night a great success

Welcome to Maleny was thrilled to see so many people come to our movie night Freedom stories – a big thank you for the financial donations, for the many letters signed advocating for refugees, for people who put their names down for potentially hosting refugees for a night, and for buying our Welcome to Maleny Tshirts. What a night it was!
Coming up for Welcome to Maleny – a new Welcoming Day for refugees, a community conversation and of course some popping up stalls in town. Look for the flags.
To receive news from Welcome to Maleny, please email admin@malenync.org.au

MNC's emergency relief program provides food, coffee vouchers, counselling, financial counselling, phone bill assistance and other referrals for people in need. MNC also provides blankets, linen, swags, pots and pans, camping stoves and tents for people temporarily without shelter.

"An incredible community resource"

'Elizabeth' is a middle aged lady with chronic fatigue syndrome whose only source of income is a widow’s pension, which is insufficient to live on. She has utilised the emergency relief service in the past to help with groceries – this was particularly helpful recently when her mentally ill son was living with her.
She has signed up for some counselling sessions at MNC, and really enjoys the MNC weekly community lunches.
Elizabeth is very grateful for the help she has received from MNC and considers the Centre an “incredible community resource”. She says she will only use the emergency relief when she absolutely needs it but is so glad it is available if she does need it.

Holding tank ‘pump out’ charges

“'Pump out' is a Council service which removes grey water and sewerage from approximately 600 residences across the Sunshine Coast, which incurs significant regular charges. On 14 June Councillors McKay and Rogerson spoke at a public forum calling for support for their proposal to charge an extra $10 per year to all ratepayers across the area to provide ‘pump out’ services to those ratepayers who are required by Council to have holding tanks.
If this issue affects you, go to www.figtreetelegraph.net for more information.
