Maleny Neighbourhood News - July 2016

Hello <<First Name>>,

Join us this month to share the Sacred Ceremonial Journey with Aunty Pam, participate in the Maleny Postcard Project, join the conversations about how Maleny as a community can help refugees in their settlement process, Broadband for seniors and so much more...

And don't forget to come and meet us for Community Lunch on Thursdays. We'd love to see you there.

My Maleny - Postcards

My Maleny is a non-for-profit community arts project aimed at exploring the many and varied connections individuals and groups have with Maleny.

The project will use specifically designed postcards
onto which individuals & community groups will
create a visual response to the question, "What connects me to Maleny?"

There will be guided workshops at MNC, and you can collect blank postcards from the front desk to take away and work on at your leisure.  read more...

Refugee settlement

Welcome to Maleny Group

Join the Conversation
Monday July 4th at 1pm
Maleny Neighbourhood Centre

In response to community concerns about Refugee issues, MNC Coordinator was approached by community on "How can Maleny help refugees?".

Refugee conversations was held on Monday 20th June at 1pm. The idea behind this meeting was to enable the community to make informed decisions about what they can tangibly give to the Refugees coming to Queensland and more specifically to Brisbane.

Multicultural Development Association , Senior Manager Client Services, Tim Draper, Lisa McDonald who has worked on Nauru (Save the Children) and Lou Walsh (Buddies) who has supported Refugees in local detention centres were guest speakers and each gave us valuable information.

Tim Draper talked about MDA's settlement program of Iraqi and Syrian refugees and the latest policies and numbers for settlement. Lisa and Lou both shared their life experience working and supporting refugees and asylum seekers.

Following afternoon tea, the group decided after some discussion to have another meeting on Monday July 4th at 1pm to discuss how best the local community can support refugees.

One of the ideas was a day trip for newly settled families on the North side of Brisbane. This would include Maleny community members collaborating with MDA to provide a day of fun and food for new arrivals. Also there was discussion around a fund raising event to raise money for phone cards for those imprisoned on Nauru.

All are welcome to come and join this group of interested locals keen to form an ongoing group.

Maleny Neighbourhood Centre became the venue for the amazing Art for Peace project from 19th to June 30th May.

Approximately 200 people participated in the creation of a 1.8 x 8 metre mural based on the theme “Say Yes to Family Peace”. The wall was made from over 130 canvasses all joined together and set in a semi-circle. The full circle was completed with straw bales to allow people to sit and engage in conversation or even to just watch and listen as the eclectic artwork evolved. read more...

Parents of Teenagers

Peer to Peer Support Group

This programme has now completed.

This first Pilot programme for the MNC to bring parents of teens together for 20 weeks to form a peer support group to discuss and support each other on issues relating to raising teens has been very supportive and successful for the parents involved.

The desired outcome was that after 20 weeks, the parents could then continue to meet in their peer support group without facilitation. This objective has been met.

Testimonial:
"This facilitated group has been amazing for me. Not just another support group, the facilitation in this group supports new and shared knowledge and some great take away ideas, as well as allowing me to express my hurts and concerns, and have them listened to. - Anon"

MNC wishes to run another similar programme and is currently advertising both internally and externally for a facilitator.

Celebrating our Indigenous
Bunya Heritage

IGA kindly donated a carving for the Neighbourhood Centre, inspired by the MattyG's wood carvings you see around town.

MNC sent a poll out to our members and received a great response. Our members voted for a Bunya, in celebration of our indigenous heritage in the area.

MattyG crafted the Bunya during his exhibition at the Maleny Agricultural Show.

A big thank you to Rob from IGA for his generosity and to MattyB for his creative work.

Maleny Pearl
Connection Group

The PEARL group is continuing.  We surveyed group attendees and a common request was for the group to become social and to be based at varying locations in the community.

Please find attached the new flyer

The group has been completely rebranded and is known as Maleny Pearl Connection Group.

The Group is now more focused on socialising, getting out of the house and into the community and generally connecting with others.  This is aligned with the requests of group members.

Rebecca Jaques
Volunteer Profile

Bec and her husband have made Maleny home in an effort to provide for their family, a wholesome, rural community with all the associated benefits that we all love.

Bec was raised in Brisbane and in her teens, overindulged in experimentation with all the usual suspects until she realised that this was not what she wanted for her life. This led her initially to a voluntary position with the Royal Children’s Radio Lollipop Programme, then onto a volunteer position with the Alcohol and Drug Foundation which she felt was her calling.

Bec realised that she had a lot to offer people struggling with addiction, and their parents and families, so took herself off to Uni to study social work. She was offered work as an employee with the Drug and Alcohol Foundation whilst she studied for her degree.

Her last placement was with the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. She fell in love with us and the work we do, and stayed on as a volunteer, now offering her time as Secretary for the Management Committee. “I really love the MNC, it does so much for people, there’s no judgment, anyone can come in and be cared for. It has a really good feel and it’s great being down there.”

Thank you Bec. We very much appreciate your time and commitment to the MNC.

Caloundra & Hinterland Family Support Programme

Sometimes families struggle with problems like financial pressures, difficulties coping with children, feeling isolated, lonely & stressed. Often parents just need someone to talk to.

Family Support is an early intervention programme that aims to improved children's development and wellbeing by supporting the capacity of those in a parenting role. Specifically working with children up to the age of 12 years, Family Support seeks to:
  • strengthen family relationships
  • support families
  • improve children's wellbeing
  • increase participation in community life to strengthen family and community functioning
If you think that you or your family, may benefit from this type of support, give Wendy a call on Mob: 0423 716 705

Wendy is at the MNC on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Time: 7.30 am - 12.00 midday.

Emergency Relief Story

I am a pensioner who lives in Maleny with my only source of income being the aged pension. I find this pension is, at times, insufficient to live on and I use the emergency relief at Maleny Neighbourhood Centre occasionally.

I have received help with basic food staples and with some cookware. I also participate weekly in the Mah Jong games at the centre and find this a valuable social networking opportunity for myself.

I appreciate that there is always something for morning tea available and that means I don’t have to worry about lunch when I go home.

I am very grateful for the help I have received from the MNC and consider the centre an excellent community facility.  I especially think that a couple of the volunteers (Meryl and Duncan) are extremely “down to earth” and exceptional in their ability to make people comfortable.

I would recommend the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre to anyone in need or to anyone who is looking for a volunteer opportunity. I foresee the need for myself to use the services of the MNC again and am very thankful that it is available.
