Maleny Neighbourhood News - November 2016

Hello <<First Name>>,

What a great Open Day we had with some 100 guests visiting and about 65 lunches served on the day!

And it's November and that means we're thinking about Christmas. Christmas breakfast at the MNC is ALWAYS a treat. If you would like to help out on the day, we'd love to hear from you.

There are some awesome parent and women support groups available at MNC so check them out.

Open Day
Maleny Neighbourhood Centre

The Maleny Neighbourhood Centre "Open Day" was held  on 27th October.

The concept of the Open Day was for the local Maleny community to come in and see what the Centre actually does. It was also great opportunity for the Centre to recruit more volunteers, in areas such as gardens, reception and kitchen.

Over 100 people came through the Centre between 10am and 2pm, some stopped and perused the various stalls, comprising of Centrelink, Sunshine Coast Legal Aid,  Blackall Range Care services, as well as groups like CHASM (affordable housing group) and W2M (Refugee Support group).

We estimate that 60-70 local people enjoyed a sumptuous Thursday lunch with dessert for $5 a plate, a weekly activity at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre.

Fix It Cafe volunteers were able to assist people with items that required mending for a small donation of $5.

Raffle was drawn, with 1st prize being $500 voucher from Concept IT, and 2nd prize, 2 nights accommodation at Maleny Lodge including breakfast.

Maleny Neighbourhood Centre Centre Coordinator and Management Committee would like to thank all volunteers and Staff who assisted with arrangements for the day.

CHRISTMAS BREAKFAST

It's November and we can't ignore it, it's time to start planning for Christmas. And at the Neighbourhood Centre that means Christmas Breakfast!

We're beginning to plan all the roles that need to be filled. If you would love to help out, we'd love to hear from you. You can respond to this email, or call in and let us know at the front desk.

I bags the Welcoming Committee job again this year! There were some 400 guests last year and that meant on Christmas Day I got about 400 hugs! Best day ever!

The Telehealth Parent Counselling Trial is looking at telehealth video appointments (video conferencing) as a way of delivering parent counselling to families in rural, remote areas or those unable to access a Child Health Centre.

All counselling is provided by fully qualified professional social workers or psychologists known as Early Intervention Parenting Clinicians/Early Intervention Clinicians (EIPC/EICs). At this time of starting up business here in Maleny, Spencer has moved his office to be on-site in Coral Street. Take the opportunity to go along and chat. You'll get the benefit of his long history working with regeneration and the biodiversity of our local region.

Caloundra & Hinterland Family Support Programme

Sometimes families struggle with problems like financial pressures, difficulties coping with children, feeling isolated, lonely & stressed. Often parents just need someone to talk to.

Family Support is an early intervention programme that aims to improved children's development and wellbeing by supporting the capacity of those in a parenting role. Specifically working with children up to the age of 12 years, Family Support seeks to:
  • strengthen family relationships
  • support families
  • improve children's wellbeing
  • increase participation in community life to strengthen family and community functioning
If you think that you or your family, may benefit from this type of support, give Wendy a call on Mob: 0423 716 705 or Holly on 0488 000 343.

Wendy is at the MNC on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Time: 7.30 am - 12.00 midday.

Emergency Relief Story

I am a middle aged woman living in a rental accomodation with my son and my son’s girlfriend. I am in the Newstart program through Centrelink and am currently studying with the hopes of getting work soon.

Money is very tight and I found myself in the position of requiring assistance from the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre recently. Previously I had been borrowing money from my elderly mother which I did not want to do anymore.

The Centre was great and supplied me with some groceries and a reference to St. Vinnies for a clothing voucher. I have also signed up for budgeting counselling through the Centre.

I feel the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre is a wonderful resource and I would recommend it to anyone in need. I would also not hesitate to use it again if needed.

I also really enjoy the weekly lunches at the Neighbourhood Centre - they are so good and it definitely does not have that “soup kitchen” feel to it at all!
