Hello <<First Name>>,
Two important events being held at the Centre, this month. On 12 November the Right Track workshop will consider how the right use of language can make a significant contribution to issues of social justice. It will focus on refugees but can be applied equally to other minority groups in our community. The second event will assist people who support community members who may be suicidal to become more aware of the support services that may be available to them. See below for more information.
Just a reminder that there are two Melbourne Cup events of interest in Maleny, the one being held at The Orangery is a part-fundraiser for the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre.

Addressing the lack of affordable housing in Maleny
|
|
CHASM (Compassionate Housing Affordability Solutions Maleny) is a community group which is focussed on addressing, in some small way, the lack of affordable housing in Maleny and surrounding districts.
Skyrocketing rents and a shrinking rental market threatens the wonderful diversity of our community as artists, performers, service workers, pensioners – particularly older single women and others find themselves priced out of the market and move away due to not being able to find local affordable rentals.
CHASM’s aim is to purchase or build up to 10 small off-grid relocatable homes which will be made available for a low rent to a local person, couple or family in housing stress. We will commence with a pilot project to obtain and place the first dwelling, and lessons learnt from the pilot will inform how we proceed in obtaining and managing the remaining 9 dwellings.

CAN YOU HELP?

One of the Centre's main functions is to support community members who find themselves in a crisis situation. Each month we would like to share one of their stories:
An excellent community facility
I am a Maleny aged pensioner. I find this pension is at times insufficient to live on and I use the Emergency Relief Program at MNC occasionally.
I have received help with basic food staples and with some cookware. I also used to participate weekly in the Mah Jong games at the Centre and found this a valuable social networking opportunity. Something for morning tea was always available and that meant I didn’t have to worry about lunch when I went home.
I am very grateful for the help I have received from the MNC and consider the Centre an excellent community facility. Some of the volunteers are exceptional in their ability to make people feel comfortable. I would recommend the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre to anyone in need or to anyone who is looking for a volunteer opportunity.

Our sincere thanks to all those community groups and individuals who have donated to our Emergency Relief program funding since the last newsletter.
These included Bob Hal who donated $300 worth of IGA vouchers and the Interact group from Maleny State High School who donated $200 towards the homelessness fund.
These donations help us to achieve our fundraising aim of $12,000 for the Emergency Relief Program...
THANKS AGAIN!
