December 2017

by Sammelan Sek-Reid, Flexi School*

What is the meaning of Christmas? For some people, it might be about religion or getting presents, for others it may be about spending time with family or being grateful for the things we have. And some people don’t celebrate Christmas at all.
But no matter what the meaning of Christmas is for you, it’s a day of love, of happiness, a day where everyone comes together as one, to celebrate being alive and having people who love you.
The most beautiful thing about Christmas is that you get the best gift of all. You get the gift of giving, and giving, is the best gift that you could get. So this Christmas, let's discover what Christmas spirit means to us and instead of counting our presents, let's count our blessings. Let's be grateful for all the things and people we have in our lives.

About the Maleny Flexi School

Maleny Flexi School, situated at MNC, started in 2002 and has steadily grown to a size where it now supports more than 30 students, who engage in different aspects of vocational development training along with the basic subjects of English and Maths. It is a place where students can complete their studies at their own pace and engage in activities that will assist them in vocational development.
Come join us for breakfast!
Christmas breakfast will be from 8am to 11am – Everyone is welcome! Bring your family or by yourself to celebrate with your community. Beautiful hot breakfast for everyone, vegetarian options too. We heard Santa would pass by too.

Santa needs more games, books and DVDs.

Could you contribute and donate board games, books and DVDs for families appropriate for children? Santa will distribute them to children on the day.

Christmas hampers

Maleny Credit Union, Pomodoras, Gypsy's Table, Baker/Robinson Lawyers, Quota, Lions Rotary and many others are donating some Christmas hampers to families going through a difficult time. If you would like to do so too please contact Anne on 5494 2907.
How you can help

One of the Centre's main priority is to support community members who find themselves in a crisis situation this is the Emergency Relief Program. MNC assists vulnerable families and individuals of our local community in a variety of ways. For the food relief program we do not get any government assistance – we are reliant solely on the generosity of the community.
So far this year we have raised approximately $8,900 but we still hope to reach our target of $20,000. People in difficulty need fuel vouchers, stoves if they're sleeping rough and sometimes help with emergency payments such as power bills, prescriptions and food.
Our emergency food program costs about $1,000 per month. The average food parcel costs $30 depending on the number of people in the family. We also set aside a budget of $1000 per year for IGA vouchers for people with specific food allergies – so far we have accrued $600 this financial year towards this. If you or your organisation can assist please contact us.
Heartfelt thanks
to the following community members for
their generous donations:
The Garden Club for fuel vouchers
Maleny Lions for swags for homeless people
CHASM for money raised during Homelessness Week for emergency accommodation
QUOTA, Maleny Anglican Church, Share the Dignity and Susanne Whaling for toiletry items
ACTU for $100 in memory of Bill Richardson.
Attendees at Bill Richardson's memorial at MNC for donating food items and personal items.
Dental Centre Maleny for toothpaste and toothbrushes
Ananda Marga River School for toilet paper
Dawaat Indian Restaurant Maleny for delivering meals every fortnight
• Maleny State High School Interact Club for $200 to help with homelessness

THANKS AGAIN!

Visit your nearest piggy bank!

A great way to support MNC Emergency Relief Program is to donate to one of the local piggy banks distributed around local businesses, or to get one in your place of work:
19 businesses have one:
Maleny Library, Sarah's Unplugged, Hinterland Country Diner, Hair on Maple, Maleny Optical, Maple St Coop, Rosetta Books, Marketplace organic cafe, Concept IT cafe, Maleny Gym, Watson's' Garage, Witta general store, Industree, Judy Coey Optical, Trigoly Tax, Dental Centre Maleny, Maleny Cheese Factory, Conondale store and the Conondale School staff room.
An extra thank you to Rosetta Books and Judy Coey Optical who go an extra mile to contribute. In January we collected more than $200 from Rosetta's piggy bank as they were asking clients to put the money for wrapping in the piggy bank. Judy Coey Optical has also put in extra support for our Emergency Relief Program.
More than $1000 has been collected since the beginning of the program. Thankyou everyone.
