Maleny Neighbourhood News - April 2016

Hello <<First Name>>, when you keep as busy as MNC does, the year just seems to fly by!

We've got so much in the planning for the coming months. Something for everyone. Maleny Neighbourhood Centre is a busy community hub. Drop in to say hi, and have a cuppa. If you'd like to volunteer to help out with any of our coming events - The Art Prize and DV Walk, we will welcome your participation with open arms!
From 11 to 13 June 2016, Maleny Neighbourhood Centre will host the Inaugural MNC National Art Prize.

MNC will be inviting artists from all over Australia to participate in bringing the message of RESPECT into focus as we continue our work to support marginalised groups in our community.

Maleny Neighbourhood Centre (MNC) works to reduce hardship in our local area and with a strong contingent of volunteers is committed to supporting community. Our work is to foster resilient and fair communities and a just society where diversity is celebrated and participation encouraged.

In May of each year MNC holds two very important events
“Say No to Domestic Violence and Yes to Respect Day”,
“National Healing Day”. Both these events highlight the need for “respect”.

MNC also works to be inclusive of other marginalised communities, in particular the LGBTI community and Refugees.

The event will be hosted by the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, the winning entry will be selected by a panel of 3 judges and announced on the opening night. The terms and conditions of the art prize and entry form will be available on the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre’s website from the 1st March 2016 at www.malenync.org.au.

The first prize winner will receive $3000 which is sponsored by the Maleny IGA.

WOMEN'S SPACE MALENY 2016

We had an absolutely amazing day at Women's Space. The energy was truly sublime. A big thank you to everyone who participated and to everyone who came along.

Lots of locals joined the day, and many people from further afield as well.

A big thank you to our volunteer team, to Paul from Saintsational Sausages who donated for our sausage sizzle, and to those who donated items for raffles: Mutki Organic Cosmetics, Holland's Gallery, Anne Aleckson, Renee Maine, Terri Schaumberg and Blessed Earth, and Pam Marsden. And thank you to Josie Coco - BodyTalk for organising this event as a fund raiser for MNC. We made in excess of $1000 from the event.

Women's Space will be an annual event. We would love to hear from local Practitioners who subscribe to the ethos - "the body is capable of self-healing with the right information and support", and who are prepared to share knowledge and wisdom with visitors on the day, to support their self-healing journey. Josie will start the planning process for Women's Space Maleny 2017 in July. Please contact her here

Prizes were drawn and won by:
Mukti Cosmetics: Denise Hoffman
Journals & Holland Gallery Gift Voucher: Sonya Wildgrace
Blessed Earth Products: Sharon Cleland

Here are some images from the day.

Parents of Teenagers

Peer to Peer Support Group

Having teenagers can be challenging as our children become young adults with different views on life to ours, wanting to explore the world their way or not always being able to communicate with us. It can be tough. You are not alone.

If you want to share, ask questions or just connect, come and find support with other parents in a facilitated small group.

Testimonial:
"This facilitated group has been amazing for me already. Not just another support group, the facilitation in this group supports new and shared knowledge and some great take away ideas, as well as allowing me to express my hurts and concerns, and have them listened to. - Anon"

The group of parents of teenagers meeting on Tuesday mornings has reached its capacity. A new group is starting on Thursday 14th April in the evening  5.30 to 7.30pm.

If you can't make these times but still would like to join please contact the facilitator: Anne

"We live in a biodiversity hotspot", says Spencer. "There are some 3500 plants local to the region and we're encouraging home gardeners to plant them as an alternative to the usual garden plants that become weeds in our local forests."

At this time of starting up business here in Maleny, Spencer has moved his office to be on-site in Coral Street. Take the opportunity to go along and chat. You'll get the benefit of his long history working with regeneration and the biodiversity of our local region.

The PEARL group is continuing.  We surveyed group attendees and a common request was for the group to become social and to be based at varying locations in the community.

Please find attached the new flyer

The group has been completely rebranded and is known as Maleny Pearl Connection Group.

The Group is now more focused on socialising, getting out of the house and into the community and generally connecting with others.  This is aligned with the requests of group members.

Caloundra & Hinterland Family Support Programme

Sometimes families struggle with problems like financial pressures, difficulties coping with children, feeling isolated, lonely & stressed. Often parents just need someone to talk to.

Family Support is an early intervention programme that aims to improved children's development and wellbeing by supporting the capacity of those in a parenting role. Specifically working with children up to the age of 12 years, Family Support seeks to:
  • strengthen family relationships
  • support families
  • improve children's wellbeing
  • increase participation in community life to strengthen family and community functioning
If you think that you or your family, may benefit from this type of support, give Wendy a call on Mob: 0423 716 705

Wendy is at the MNC on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Time: 7.30 am - 12.00 midday.

Emergency Relief Story

I am a middle aged woman living in a rental accommodation with my son and my son’s girlfriend. I am in the Newstart program through Centrelink and am currently studying with the hopes of getting work soon. Money is very tight and I found myself in the position of requiring assistance from the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre recently. Previously I had been borrowing money from my elderly mother which i did not want to do anymore.

The Centre was great and supplied me with some groceries and a reference to St. Vinny’s for a clothing voucher. I have also signed up for budgeting counselling through the Centre.

I feel the Maleny Neighborhood Centre is a wonderful resource and I would recommend it to anyone in need. I would also not hesitate to use it again if needed. I also really enjoy the weekly lunches at the Neighbourhood Centre - they are so good and it definitely does not have that “soup kitchen” feel to it at all!

GO FUND ME Campaign
for Bianca Bond and Family.

"Bianca and her 3 beautiful children’s home has been half burnt down! Everything that has been lost or damaged was of great cultural, spiritual and heart significance sentimentally to them. The furniture, washing machine, fridge, clothes, shoes etc. can be replaced but their meaningful memories that are priceless are gone forever."

Please support this GOFUNDME campaign to help Bianca and her family through this difficult time.

A fundraiser event: Bee's ba'lum'beer ba'ri'bum is organised on the 16th April (see information in main column)
