National Healing Day

Thursday 26th May
Starting at 10.30am

Each year Maleny Neighbourhood Centre hosts an event to acknowledge the importance of this historic date.  This day gives people the chance to come together and share the steps towards healing for the Stolen Generations, their families and communities. Stolen generations refer to Indigenous Australians who were forcibly removed from their families and communities.

MNC was the first organisation on the Sunshine Coast to acknowledge Sorry Day and we continue to work alongside our indigenous peoples, and uphold this tradition.

Please join us and participate in building these valuable community connections.
Stay for Community Lunch at 12.30pm.

Parents of Teenagers

Peer to Peer Support Group

Having teenagers can be challenging as our children become young adults with different views on life to ours, wanting to explore the world their way or not always being able to communicate with us. It can be tough. You are not alone.
If you want to share, ask questions or just connect, come and find support with other parents in a facilitated small group.

"This facilitated group has been amazing for me already. Not just another support group, the facilitation in this group supports new and shared knowledge and some great take away ideas, as well as allowing me to express my hurts and concerns, and have them listened to. - Anon"

The group of parents of teenagers meeting on Tuesday mornings has reached its capacity. A new group is starting on Thursdays in the evening  5.00 to 7.30pm. Please call Anne on 0490 314 011 if you are thinking of coming.

If you can't make these times but still would like to join please contact the facilitator: Anne

Self-care and Family Healthcare Course

Would you like to be able to help your children recover quickly when they have hurt themselves and they are overwhelmed with childhood accidents like skinned knees and crushed fingers?

What about when they have to do something at school that makes them really nervous – tests, exams, public presentations?

Would you love to have a simple tool that boosts the immune system to help your teen clear their acne so that they can walk out into the world with confidence.

These techniques also regulate thirst for a naturally good hydration, coordination and balance, and much more...

I'm bringing this one-day interactive course to Maleny for the 2nd time in June.

You'll learn 5 simple energy techniques that I call my Self-care and Family Healthcare Course, that will surprise you with their effectiveness.

Community Lunch Thursdays

Come and join us for a delicious lunch, meet other community members for a $5 donation.

MNC needs five volunteers each week to put on this splendid feast. The new roster is on the office door - please choose a time that suits you to help out.

Your Local Native Nursery

For quality services, products and advice we are your one stop shop for local native plants, bush foods, timber trees, native gardens, tools and equipment for Revegetation and Bush Regeneration, nest boxes, books, DVD’s and art.

"We live in a biodiversity hotspot", says Spencer. "There are some 3500 plants local to the region and we're encouraging home gardeners to plant them as an alternative to the usual garden plants that become weeds in our local forests."

At this time of starting up business here in Maleny, Spencer has moved his office to be on-site in Coral Street. Take the opportunity to go along and chat. You'll get the benefit of his long history working with regeneration and the biodiversity of our local region.

Good News for the Hinterland Bus Service.

We're celebrating! MNC and volunteers were instrumental in bringing focus on this important service for Maleny people.
"The current Government has listened to our voices and has recently announced that the service is here to stay.
The Hon. Stirling Hinchliffe Minister for Transport and the Commonwealth Games has supported the community request for the bus to become a permanent service.
After many years of uncertainty the Hinterland community will soon have, for the first time, a permanent public transport connection."

For further information on the service, contact and for timetabling information, contact Glasshouse Country Coaches on 5496 9249 or visit

Maleny Pearl
Connection Group

The PEARL group is continuing.  We surveyed group attendees and a common request was for the group to become social and to be based at varying locations in the community.

Please find attached the new flyer

The group has been completely rebranded and is known as Maleny Pearl Connection Group.

The Group is now more focused on socialising, getting out of the house and into the community and generally connecting with others.  This is aligned with the requests of group members.

Maleny Local Business

MNC is launching an opportunity for local ethical businesses to advertise in our monthly newsletter which goes out to about 1600 people per month.
Your ad could read for example:
"Specialising in bringing you the very best
service possible since ....
'A quote from your valued client here or a feature of a new and exciting product or service that you offer.' "

Volunteer Profile

Nigel Wiggins

Nigel started out adult life as a Marine Engineer but soon discovered that life at sea was not to his liking. Through a number of interesting twists and turns in his young life, Nigel found himself studying hospitality.
Some decades later Nigel can claim to have immersed himself in a number of very successful restaurants as a chef and business owner, including one that attracted a Michelin Rosette!
In 1979 Nigel’s family invited him to join them on a trip to Australia. He visited Sydney and Airlie Beach. He says he almost became an illegal immigrant right then! “Hailing from the UK, who wouldn’t want to stay!”
Nigel returned home to await a visa and headed back to Australia to make it his home, firstly in Sydney, then Brisbane, and in 2003, Nigel and his wife decided that the Sunshine Coast was perfect for them. They found a business here in Maleny and after coming and going from Brisbane for a while, moved up and settled here.
As well as his many businesses, Nigel found he had a penchant for IT work. From the early nineties, Nigel has been exploring all things IT and now offers this service as a stand-alone business.
We are very fortunate to have Nigel participating as a volunteer here at the MNC. He has been a part of our gardening crew, and participates in our IT group. Nigel is planning to offer from MNC, a 2-hour open forum for help with anything IT – more to come as this idea develops. Can’t wait!
Thank you for your support Nigel. We really appreciate your commitment to the MNC team.

Caloundra & Hinterland Family Support Programme

Sometimes families struggle with problems like financial pressures, difficulties coping with children, feeling isolated, lonely & stressed. Often parents just need someone to talk to.

Family Support is an early intervention programme that aims to improved children's development and wellbeing by supporting the capacity of those in a parenting role. Specifically working with children up to the age of 12 years, Family Support seeks to:
  • strengthen family relationships
  • support families
  • improve children's wellbeing
  • increase participation in community life to strengthen family and community functioning
If you think that you or your family, may benefit from this type of support, give Wendy a call on Mob: 0423 716 705

Wendy is at the MNC on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Time: 7.30 am - 12.00 midday.

Emergency Relief Story

I am a pensioner who lives in Maleny with my only source of income being the aged pension. I find this pension is, at times, insufficient to live on and I use the emergency relief at Maleny Neighbourhood Centre occasionally.

I have received help with basic food staples and with some cookware. I also participate weekly in the Mah Jong games at the centre and find this a valuable social networking opportunity for myself. I appreciate that there is always something for morning tea available and that means I don’t have to worry about lunch when I go home.

I am very grateful for the help I have received from the MNC and consider the centre an excellent community facility.  I especially think that a couple of the volunteers (Meryl and Duncan) are extremely “down to earth” and exceptional in their ability to make people comfortable.

I would recommend the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre to anyone in need or to anyone who is looking for a volunteer opportunity. I foresee the need for myself to use the services of the MNC again and am very thankful that it is available.
