Did you know that we have a local AED (Defibrillator) situated on the Cherry Hinton Recreation ground mounted on the outside of the wooded community building? To give us all some understanding of what to expect if we ever need to make use of the equipment Cllr Russ McPherson has kindly provided a summary...
"This life saving equipment is there for anyone to use (trained or not) in the event of a cardiac arrest. It is housed in a secure and heated cabinet, along with a small towel, a disposable razor and a pair of ‘tuff-cuts (surgical single use scissors). The cabinet is secured by a coded lock the number of which will be given to anyone who has called 999 and spoken to the Ambulance Control who have then determined that the use of an AED is needed. In that event an ambulance will be dispatched to the given location immediately as a priority and so no time will be lost in obtaining emergency help.
It works like this: On calling 999 (or 112 from a mobile phone) Ambulance control will (if appropriate) direct the caller to the nearest AED (should one be available) and will stay on the phone until the caller has located the AED and gained access to the cabinet and has then returned to the casualty, they will continue to give support to the rescuers in the operation of the AED and basic Life Support (BLS). Please note that any publicly located AED is ONLY available to the public by calling 999 and speaking to the ambulance control; it is not available as a ‘help-yourself’. The operation of an AED is not a difficult process, it will ‘speak’ to you! However – immediate and effective Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CRR) is absolutely essential in the meantime and before the AED arrives in order to give the casualty the best chance of survival. If there is the interest (and the library will give me the time & space) my plan is to run a ‘By-Stander CPR’ session on a Saturday morning in the coming weeks in order to more fully explain how to recognise a Cardiac Arrest or an injury which may lead to one. Please email chragroupoutlook.com to register your interest.
