Proposed Changes to Travel in Cambridge
Many residents have asked that we highlight the possible congestion charge resulting from a Sustainable Travel Zone for Cambridge,
Had a leaflet through the door about the Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) Sustainable Travel Zone (STZ)? If you don’t know what that is, well, take a look at the home page of this site by clicking here.
Not had a leaflet? Have you been to an event? Not heard about any events? Angry about the “wasting of public funds” in printing propaganda that is being dropped through letterboxes by the GCP? A £5 congestion charge to drive into and around Cambridge is being considered as part of a “once in a generation” plan to shake up how people travel. The ‘Sustainable Travel Zone’ road user charge is proposed by the Greater Cambridge Partnership for private vehicles between 7am and 7pm on weekdays. While driving in the city could get more expensive, the GCP has revealed plans to make buses cheaper. Flat fares have been proposed to be introduced; in Cambridge a ticket could cost £1 to travel in the city, with a ticket in the wider ‘travel to work’ area proposed to cost £2.
The plans follow the ‘Making Connections’ consultation run by the GCP last year. The authority said this revealed that the public was supportive of improvements to the public transport network, as well as its aims to reduce pollution and congestion.
There is a consultation process and all residents should consider the proposals and give feedback. The consultation and more information can be accessed here
