Thinking Globally, Acting Locally Three years ago Cambridge City Council and Cambridgeshire County Council both declared a Climate Emergency and a Biodiversity Emergency. And, we’ve only got to look at the record temperatures experienced this summer to see that this emergency is very real. But it’s also huge and some people may be overwhelmed by the size of the problem. How and where can you start to address an issue of such magnitude? Well, for one group of Cherry Hinton residents, the place to start addressing these problems is right here in Cherry Hinton. The members of Green Action Cherry Hinton feel that it’s time to follow the old adage, ‘think globally, act locally’. For them, every step we take will make a difference. And the more people who take those steps, the bigger the difference. The group has two broad objectives. The first is to help Cherry Hinton residents reduce their carbon footprint. The second is to increase biodiversity within the area. And they want to work with local people, groups and businesses to achieve this. They’ve already begun to take their first small steps. For example, they’ve established a scheme to recycle medicine blister packs with Cherry Hinton Pharmacy. This already has the support of the Church End Women’s Institute and the local line dancing group. Another scheme – recycling stationery like old marker pens, biros and printer cartridges – has been set up with Cherry Hinton library. A third project – to help local residents save energy - is currently in the works. But more members are needed to help achieve the group’s objectives. Everyone is welcome. The future activities of the group very much depend on what resources it can draw upon. Further information is available from Green Action Cherry Hinton at

Capturing Cambridge is putting local history on the map in and around Cambridge. Discover and explore stories of local people and places and share some of your own too.

The Capturing Cambridge website was first devised as part of the Mill Road History Project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, 2013-16. The work of documenting the history of the Mill Road area continues at the Mill Road History Society which is part of our growing network of local and community history societies and groups (see LINKS).

Since 2016, Capturing Cambridge has been managed and run by the Museum of Cambridge (formerly the Folk Museum) as part of a wider project funded by Cambridge City Council.

Articles are written and posted on to the site by a team of volunteer Community Editors who receive training and on-going support from the Museum.  You can look at some Cherry Hinton contributions here
