Endangered giant bluefin tuna have returned to Prince Edward Island, Canada in surprising abundance after a complete disappearance from overfishing. But something strange is going on - the normally wary tuna no longer fear humans. There are so many of them, and they are so hungry, that they literally eat out of people’s hands like pets.

And at the same time, many scientists contend that the species is on the brink of collapse, their numbers down as much as 90 percent. The commercial tuna industry has succeeded in conditioning us to see these fish as "food" rather than wildlife in need of protection - after all, who hasn't eaten canned tuna, or tried nobly presented sushi? We have no idea what exactly we are eating. With a passionate concern for the fate of these mercilessly hunted and valuable fish, director John Hopkins brings these issues into sharp focus.

From the Director...

Much to their peril, these magnificent creatures just do not have the same "cuddle" factor we have given land-based animals such as lions, giraffes, and panda bears... I want audiences to feel a long over-due empathy for these extraordinary giants. My cinematographic idea was to let them speak for themselves by their sheer monumental presence swimming alive in the ocean. I wanted my doc Bluefin to be emotional and accessible for broad audiences. Some people have cried near the end of the film. Others swear they will never eat sushi again. I wanted to allow audiences to access these critical issues without being didactic, over-bearing, or boring."
