This week's newsletter focuses on agriculture.

Penn State's Ag Progress Days is on August 9–11, at the Russell E. Larson Agricultural Research Center at Rock Springs, located 9 miles southwest of State College on state Route 45.

IoT promise for better farm irrigation

A low-power, wide-area wireless network is a low-cost, easily implemented online arrangement that provides precision crop irrigation.

Insecticide-coated seeds dangerous?

Studies suggest that seeds coated with neonicotinoid insecticides may harm nontarget insects, mammals, and birds. In response, states are starting to restrict use of these products.

Soil tillage reduces ‘longevity vitamin’

Crops grown in tilled soil may contain much less of an amino acid known for its potent antioxidant properties, which is produced by certain fungi and bacteria in the soil.
Researchers found that Pennsylvania farmers markets generated at least $100 million of direct economic activity over the six-month market season.

How farms can adapt to climate change

Dairy farmers in the Northeast can reduce the environmental impact of their operations and maximize revenues by double cropping and injecting manure into the soil, rather than broadcasting it.
With the support of an IEE seed grant, Felipe Montes and his team are developing a nitrous oxide monitoring system for soil emissions in an effort to mitigate its impacts on climate change and improve soil health.
