Club Captains in Youth Sport Launch

Swim Ireland were delighted to officially launch our Club Captains in Youth Sport Programme at Dublin Zoo this week. The programme was developed through Erasmus+ funding with support from Léargas and our partners Sport Northern Ireland.  It was a privilege to have Brian Howard, member of Dublin's All Ireland winning football team, launch the programme and to have so many other National Governing Bodies (NGBs) of Sport in attendance.

Within the beautiful backdrop of Dublin Zoo we shared the youth led initiative which sees young captains supported in their roles as leaders in their sport. Through this two-year Swim Ireland lead project, the framework was developed with all sports in mind with the hope of sending a unified message to our young athletes. We want young people to embrace the life skills sport provides and give them the tools they need to fulfill the captain’s role in a safe and supported environment.

Irish athletes had a phenomenal week at the recent World Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina with our three swimmers Niamh Coyne, Mona McSharry and Robbie Powell and Diver Tanya Watson producing some fine performances! The quartet, who were part of a team of 16 Team Ireland athletes, came away with a Silver Medal (Niamh Coyne 100m Breaststroke), 6 x Finals, 1 x Semi-Finals and an Irish Record (Mona McSharry 50m Freestyle).
Paul Talty & Cormac Powell Added to our Performance Team
Swim Ireland last week announced two new members to our Performance swimming and diving team in preparation for the 2019 World Championships in Korea and the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo as well as National Diving Coach Damian Ball moving to a full time role.

Complaints and Disciplinary Training

As part of our on-going support for clubs and members Swim Ireland will again be providing training in managing people, situations and conflict. These workshops are aimed at helping club members in dealing with issues and developing a greater understanding of the complaints and disciplinary process.  Unfortunately, we are faced with difficulties in clubs that sometimes need to be dealt with; by using working examples we will provide you with the knowledge and skills to ensure you are confident in dealing with any issues that may arise in your club.

If you are unsure about any of the above and want to know more about the Swim Ireland Complaints and Disciplinary process, this workshop is for you.

To streamline the process for clubs to obtain accreditation passes for Athletes, Team Managers and Coaches we will be completing this through the Swim Ireland membership database going forward.  If you are an Athlete, Team Manager or Coach that will be attending one of our National Events in 2018-19 you will need to ensure your personal details are up to date on the system and most importantly that you have an up to date photograph uploaded to your profile. We will not be able to process accreditation passes unless your profile has an up to date photograph. If you have never accessed your profile before follow this link -

European Week of Sport saw one of the most enjoyable events on our calendar to date! In partnership with Age and Opportunity Ireland we hosted two days of fun for over 50’s, ‘The Dance, Dip and Dive’ gave over 300 participants a chance to dance (warm up) before they ventured in to the icy Clontarf Baths where they could splash, swim or try out snorkelling or scuba diving. The day was finished off with tea and cake in “The Baths” restaurant.

Junior Interprovincial Tournament
An inter-provincial water polo tournament hosted by Swim Ulster, takes place in Bangor Aurora beginning this Friday. There are fourteen teams taking part in two different age groups - Under 15 (Born 2003) & Under 17 (Born 2001) teams from Ulster (4), Leinster (4), Connacht (2) and the Scotland Saltires Regional (4) team.  There has been a very positive response to this competition which has not run for a number of years and the presence of a team from Scotland gives an extra dimension to the competition.
We were delighted to attend the Nordic Baby Swimming Conference in Selfoss, Iceland in October.  Speakers from across the globe travelled to Iceland to discuss baby swimming and popular techniques and programmes, with over 150 attendees  the swimming “Baby Whisperer” Snorri Magnusson, and self proclaimed baby expert and author of Happy Babies Swim, Ulrika Faerch shared their expertise in this ever growing area of aquatics!  Watch out for our Baby Swimming Seminar Day coming in 2019 to celebrate all things Baby Swimming in Ireland, with industry experts presenting on relevant topics that will enhance your baby swimming programmes.
