Breaking the cycle of incarceration with the transforming love of Jesus Christ.
Work 1st Provides Hope through Employment
Did you know that within 3 years of their release from prison, two thirds of ex-offenders will be back?* That number is staggering, especially when we consider the toll it takes on our communities. There are many critical factors that contribute to this high recidivism rate and the inability to find employment is one of them.
In March, New Mornings joined forces with agencies like Pennsylvania Career Link, Educational Data Systems (EDSI), and Chester County Workforce Development Board to bring Work 1st to Chester County. Work 1st provides job readiness workshops and employment services to individuals with criminal justice barriers. Our goal is to help these individuals gain and maintain full-time work, moving them toward financial independence and a healthier community!
Janis McElwee, our caseworker, interviews potential participants both in Chester County Prison and in her Coatesville office and then passes their intakes on to a career advisor and job locator, right down the hall. This new position pairs well with Janis’ heart to serve as an advocate and liaison for those in prison who return to our community. She is constantly meeting with clients in her office, welcoming in the homeless to use her phone or help with some other basic need the rest of us take for granted. She also sets aside most Fridays to meet with those in Chester County Prison and Correctional Center. Please pray for Janis as she meets with people at such a vulnerable time in their lives and as she partners with the many agencies involved. Pray also for those being released from prison and the homeless in our area; that they would see hope for a better tomorrow.
If you want to help, Janis’ clients are always in need of bus passes so they can make job interviews or other appointments. She distributes our Men’s Grace Bags (reusable bags filled with toiletry/personal care items) to those from City Gate Men’s Shelter, and they are requesting boxers (sizes M-XL). To donate money toward bus passes or new boxers, see “Together We Can” at the bottom of this email and designate your gift or call Janis at 384.380.1587 to drop off items at the office.

A Testimony of Grace Behind Bars
"God's helped me get through this time. I'm almost at the finish line; still some hills to climb, and I'm doing it with Him. They [New Mornings' ministry teams] have been very comforting and supportive. I couldn't have come this far without them. I'm very thankful for them."
