Metro Mayor asks employers to support apprenticeships

West of England Metro Mayor Dan Norris is urging the region’s employers help increase the number of apprenticeships in the region. The West of England Combined Authority and Western Training Provider Network have launched Share to Support which aims to help smaller businesses recover through funding new apprenticeships.

New regional event planners guide

The newly established Meet Bristol & Bath Convention Bureau has launched a new guide for event planners considering the West of England for future corporate events, conferences, and incentive travel.

The new guide, produced in partnership with the West of England Combined Authority and Invest Bristol & Bath contains information about the region’s economic sector strengths in Advanced Engineering & Aerospace, Digital and Creative, High Tech, Energy, Life Sciences and Financial and Professional services, plus recommendations for a range of trusted venues and suppliers.

New plan for the region's trees and woodlands

The launch of the Forest of Avon Plan: A Tree and Woodland Strategy for the West of England, has been welcomed by the Metro Mayor, together with partners from the West of England Nature Partnership and the Forest of Avon Trust.

The plan supports regional targets to double tree cover by 2050 – an extra 1.1 million trees every decade – one for each resident in the region. Key goals include planting thousands of street trees in areas of low tree cover, creating networks of trees for nature and bringing more existing woodlands into management so they are properly cared for to give people and wildlife amazing benefits.

Creating a smarter and greener future

West of England Metro Mayor Dan Norris took steps towards a smarter and greener future on a visit to the region’s world-leading research and development facility, the National Composites Centre (NCC). 
The Metro Mayor got to grips with a new 5-metre-high robot, the latest state-of-the-art machine to be installed at the NCC’s facility on the Bristol & Bath Science Park at Emersons Green.
He pledged to ensure that more and more people know about the ground-breaking work taking place in the West of England, which impacts nationally and internationally. From bridges to wind turbine blades to super strong hydrogen tanks this is the essential tech needed to reach our net zero targets.

Work experience opportunity for young people 

What is more important – travel or the environment? Where will you live when you are working? How will you travel for school or leisure?

These just are some of the questions that we will be posing to 30 students as part of a three-day virtual work experience.

Students from Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucestershire will join us virtually from 28-30 June, for this unique work experience opportunity.

If you know someone aged 14 or over who would be interested in taking part, they can apply via this link.

Don’t miss out on a green business grant

We’re urging more of the West of England’s small and medium-sized businesses to take advantage of our grants which can make them greener and save them money. The deadline for grant applications is 25 June.

Pentagon Play is just one of the many local businesses benefiting from our Green Business Grant scheme by making energy saving improvements to its building.
The company designs and installs playground equipment for schools and nurseries. It is using its £3,000 grant to fit eco-friendly LED lighting with sensors to help save energy.
