Fall is in full swing at the Leacock Foundation!

It's always hard to say goodbye to summer, but we are thrilled that our Toronto fall programming is up and running in all of our designated communities. In South Africa, the students have returned for a final term before summer holidays begin in December.

Read on for some more updates on what's happening with the Leacock Foundation!

A look back at our Summer camp programs

This summer, we launched our first ever overnight summer camp for youth from our designated Toronto neighbourhoods. Leacock LEADership Camp was a huge success, with over 120 young people each spending one week learning about themselves and how they can make a difference in their community. Each week, as the bus pulled back into Toronto, the children were already asking if they could return to camp next summer!

Our LEAP Into Literacy summer day camps for our community partners had another successful month of July. All 250 campers had a great time stretching their literacy skills, making new friends, and sharing fun experiences. New this year, camp included a fun-filled Pan Am Games Day at the Kortright Centre with all 3 LEAP locations participating together at the same time!

It's back to school!

We are excited to kick off our after school and Saturday morning youth programs. Over 210 students from grade 1 through to grade 6 are actively participating in Saturday Morning Club, Reading Buddies and JUMP Math literacy programs. YUVA, LEAD into Innovation and LEAD through TRAILS will see approximately 350 students from grades 5 to 8 learning to lead positive change in their community.

An exciting announcement

In 2016, our partnership with the Get Ahead Project Schools will focus on a new initiative Full STEAM Ahead – which encourages the development of skills and knowledge for the students in the areas of Science, Technology Engineering/Entrepreneurialism, Arts, and Maths. Through teacher training, program development, enriching after school science/math instruction, and dynamic and engaging classroom tools, our GAP learners will be fully equipped to succeed in life after Get Ahead.

To realize this mission, we have hired an Executive Director, based in South Africa tasked with leading the strategic vision of the schools. Mariette Visser, a South African educator, was selected as the ED after an extensive international search.

We were thrilled that Mariette, along with Get Ahead Trust Board Chair, Hugh Wormald and his wife Charlotte, were able to join us at the Leacock Golf Tournament this past September. The next few years will surely be the most exciting in our shared history.

End of school year preparations

The final term of the year is coming to a close. The Get Ahead College grade 12 students had their valedictory service two weeks ago. They reflected on their time at school and celebrated their many successes. Meanwhile, junior students are practicing for their upcoming school concert in mid-November and senior students are busy preparing for their exams.

22nd Annual Leacock Golf Tournament, Dinner and Auction

In its 22nd year, the Leacock Golf Tournament, Dinner and Auction was held on September 21st, 2015 at Granite Golf Club and Auberge du Pommier. Over 120 people participated in our golf tournament and 175 attended the auction and dinner. An incredible $230,000 (net) was raised in funds to directly support educational opportunities for youth at the Get Ahead Project schools in the Eastern Cape of South Africa.

The Leacock Foundation would like to extend a big thank you to all the golfers, sponsors, and volunteers who helped make the event another huge success!
