Your YPL Connection: Spring 2016

The YPL Board of Directors is excited to bring you updates right to your inbox on the impact and benefits of your YPL membership. Each quarterly YPL newsletter will introduce you to a YPL member, give a brief update on programs with the Leacock Foundation and remind you of fun, upcoming events and exciting opportunities!

Meet Lisa, YPL Events Committee Chair

My name is Lisa Reid and I have been involved with the YPL for 5 years. I won the birth lottery and feel very lucky for the educational and developmental opportunities that I had throughout my life. I feel passionately that broader access to educational opportunities is the key to improving the societies in which we live both locally and globally.
The Leacock Foundation started with a group of like-minded individuals fundraising through wacky events. I am excited that we have continued this tradition with the YPL annual FUNdraisers including cooking classes, axe throwing and now lawn bowling. We had an amazing team this year who helped raise over $8,500! Next June, I hope to see you and your friends at our 3rd Annual Leacock Lawn Night.

What's new at the Leacock Foundation

Major highlights from our Toronto programs:

Over the March Break, Grade 7 and 8 youth from our social justice program presented Community Action Plans on cyberbullying, pollution, mental health and lack of community lighting to government officials in Ottawa. One student had this to say about her experience, "The program changed me, and it was fun because I changed my community as well."
Meanwhile, over 50 junior students from the Woburn and St. James Town communities took part in LEAP March Break Camp. LEAP Campers actively participated in math and language activities in the morning, followed by fun experiential learning programming in the afternoon through sports, games and field trips.

In April, our literacy and leadership programs that run throughout the school year came to a close. Students involved in programs such as LEAD through Trails, Take the LEAD, Reading Buddies, JUMP Math and Saturday Morning Club took part in celebrations with their mentors and program leaders as they reflected on what they learned in the programs.
An update from South Africa at the Get Ahead Project Schools:

Senior students from our Toronto partner school, Branksome Hall, visited the GAP Schools for the 12th consecutive year over the March Break. It was a valuable experience for both the Branksome and GAP students, meeting new friends and learning about a different culture.

GAP Students have completed their second term of the 2016 academic school year and are currently enjoying winter break, with some students returning to school for two weeks for Winter School. The third term will begin mid-July.

Life after Get Ahead: Out of 39 applicants, 9 graduates from Get Ahead have received bursaries for their tertiary studies from the HCI Foundation, a success rate of almost 1 in 4, compared to the general success rate of 1 in 8 applications.

2nd Annual Leacock Lawn Night a huge success!

On June 9th 2016, over 80 young professionals joined the YPL for an evening of lawn bowling, BBQ and team spirit in support of the Leacock Foundation.

Made possible with the support of the events committee, generous sponsors, donors and bowlers, we are pleased to announce that the funds raised will provide classroom and recreational materials to 450 underserved youth in Leacock's Toronto literacy programs and sponsor 3 students' education at the Get Ahead Project Schools in South Africa. Thank you for your incredible support!
Thank you to YPL members who attended the Annual Leacock Debate on April 21st, 2016. It was great having you join us. We hope you enjoyed the evening!
The YPL Board of Directors is currently planning a fun, social get together in November for YPL members and friends. Stay tuned for more information!
If you have an interest in planning events and becoming more involved with Leacock’s fundraising initiatives, a volunteer committee position may be for you!
