Running Big with Big Island Running Company

We're Expanding!

We are excited to announce that after many years of planning and repeated requests from our customers, we are finally launching a location in Hilo! Our new store is located in the S. Hata Building at 308 Kamehameha Avenue, Suite 105 in Hilo. For those of you familiar with Hilo, that's just a couple of doors down from Cafe Pesto on Bayfront.

We anticipate a soft opening this coming week, and will have a larger grand opening in a few weeks. Our Hilo hours will initially be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday - Saturday.  We will also be scheduling group runs and training groups from the store.  Check our Facebook page and website for updates on those times and information.

Our Hilo store will be managed by Cary Aurand, who we introduced to you a couple of months ago in our runner spotlight. While we'll miss her in Kona, runners in Hilo will be lucky to have her expertise and passion for running!

Thanks, Honey!

Over the last month, we've added a popular nutrition brand to our lineup - Honey Stinger.  Honey Stinger makes delicious, honey-based gels, chews, and waffles that are perfect for before, during and after your workout.
  • Gels - The honey-based gels are truly versatile and can be consumed straight from the package, on toast or in tea.  They can also be mixed with water to create an energy drink.  And they come in great flavors like Acai Pomegranate, Fruit Smoothie, Ginsting and Vanilla.
  • Chews - These chews are organic and include naturally-occurring fiber and protein. They are also smaller and softer than other brands making them easy to consume. The chews come in Fruit Smoothie, Cherry Blossom, Pomegranate Passion Fruit, Orange Blossom, Pink Lemonade, Lime-ade and, a personal favorite, Cherry Cola.
  • Waffles - The Honey Stinger waffles are a truly different fueling product that's great for a pre-workout snack or during a break in one of your longer sessions.  Honey is sandwiched between two flavored waffles for a great-tasting treat.  Waffles are available in Honey, Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry and Lemon.

Runner Spotlight

As always, this year was a great year for our runners participating in the Kona Marathon races and our training group. Starting in late March, runners gathered every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday to train for either the 5k, 10k, half marathon or full marathon.  Several runners were completing longer distances for their very first time and others were looking to run faster.

Every year participants are asked to guess their finishing times to see who can get the closest.  This year we had several close guesses in all distances.  Duke Becker was the closest in the 5K, coming within 1 minute of his time; Glee Jewell was 22 seconds off in the 10K; Sarah Nicola was 18 seconds off in the half marathon; and Sharon Neely and Brian Pruitt were both within 1 minute in the marathon. Congratulations on great pacing!

This year we were lucky to be sponsored by New Balance, who supplied shirts for our training group. Mahalo New Balance!  Congratulations to everyone who participated!

Our group runs continue every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, so come out and join us anytime.  Right now we have several people training for the Volcano Rain Forest Runs, the final event in the Triple Crown Series this year. Up next after that is training for the Honolulu Marathon and then our Couch to 5k Program!
