Running Big with Big Island Running Company

Santa Claus is Running Through Town!

As the holidays approach, make sure to come out to one of the holiday themed runs on both sides of the Big Island.  Up first in Hilo, join the UH Hilo Alumni and Friends Association for the inaugural UH Hilo Holiday Lava Run this Saturday, December 6. Get there early and loosen up with some fun group warm up exercises at the Campus Center Plaza. Be sure to check out the health and fitness vendors on site after the run. Enjoy holiday music, snacks, and don't forget about the festive costume contest. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. with a fee of $30 and the race takes off at 8 a.m.

Then later in the month, the ever popular Jingle Bell Beach Run is back on the Kona side of the Big Island.  This year, the 10th Annual Jingle Bell Beach Run 5k and 1-mile walk will be held on Sunday, December 21 at a new location - Coconut Grove Marketplace!

The 5k run will start at Coconut Grove at 7:30 a.m., run north on Alii Drive to the Kailua Pier before turning around and running south to Green Flash Coffee on Alii Drive and then back north to Coconut Grove Marketplace.  (The course is essentially the same as it has been in the past, with just a different start and finish point). There is also a free keiki dash for the kids that will follow the other events.

As always, participants are encouraged to dress up in holiday costumes, with the best costumes winning some awesome prizes.  In addition to the costume contest and prizes for the winners, the raffle prizes for the rest of the participants are always top-notch and seemingly endless!  Plus, entry to the 5k gets you a super-soft Jingle Bell Beach Run t-shirt (while supplies last) and 1-mile entrants receive a Jingle Bell Beach Run trucker hat.

Rani and Penn Henderson always put on an incredible event, so make sure to get that registration form in!  Online registration closes at 2 p.m. on Friday, December 19.  Packet pickup and late registration will take place at Big Island Running Company in the Coconut Grove Marketplace on Saturday, December 20.  More information is available on the race website at

Holiday Gift Ideas

Are you struggling for gift ideas for the runner in your life? We're here to help with a couple of suggestions:
  • Our Run Merry shirts are back for pre-order only! We have the ability to make a limited number of these on white Nike Dri-Fit short sleeve shirts, so email if you'd like to order one.  Make sure to specify what size you'd like, including men's or womens.  Shirts are $30 and orders must be received by December 10!
  • We've already seen people stocking up on Hydroflasks in anticipation of Christmas, so make sure to get yours soon.  If everyone you know already has a Hydroflask, help them customize theirs with some colorful bands or a JugLug for ease in carrying!
  • If a new GPS watch is what they are looking for, the new Garmin 920XT is a hot one. After selling out the island during the Ironman World Championships this year, the units are trickling back into stock, just in time for the holidays.

Wobble Gobble Recap

On Thanksgiving Day last week, Big Island Running Company was proud to host the 10th Annual Wobble Gobble on Walua Trail. This year over 250 people showed up to run or walk the 6.4 mile, 3.5 mile or 1 mile distance. But the most impressive thing is that they also brought with them 376 pounds of canned goods for the Hawaii Island Food Basket! Thank you to everyone for contributing.

The winners of the races won a “Wobble Gobble #1 Turkey” hat and the 6.4 mile champions also won a water bottle from Keauhou Veterinary Hospital.  Kealakehe High School cross country was well represented with Thunder Frost winning the 6.4 mile distance and Ziggy Bartholomy winning the 3.5 mile distance.  For the ladies, Rani Henderson (6.4 miles) and Brooke Myers (3.5 miles) were repeat winners from last year.  Rani once again pushed her son Cole in a stroller the entire way and Brooke once again broke her course record in the 3.5 mile distance.  In the 1-mile race, Jantzen Hing and Tayvhe-Lei Kaupu-Galon were the top turkeys. All of the participants were able to take home a prize from Brooks or Nuun and the keiki also received Turkey Trot dog tags from Miss Oahu!

As always, we could not put on this run without the help of our amazing volunteers who take time out of their Thanksgiving mornings to help: Rich, Jolene and Ryan Mears provided the post-race refreshments as well as help passing out giveaways; Linda Goeth kept runners safe at the one intersection on the course; Maggie McCleery manned the 6.4 mile turnaround and aid station; Kyra and Richard Bronson set up an aid station just near the 1-mile turnaround; Jolene and Jacob Head and family also set up an aid station in front of their Keauhou Veterinary Clinic and provided extra water when a cooler disaster toppled the table prior to the race; Ali Steiner helped with signouts and course set up; John Ferdico assisted with course set-up; Leonard Torricer and Nori Becker helped pass out popsicle sticks and assist at the finish line; Makena Becker took great photos of the event; and Miss Oahu Tiffany Kutsunai helped pass out medals to the keiki.  Thanks again to all who came out and participated, donated canned goods and volunteered!
