Running Big with Big Island Running Company

Big Island International Marathon

On March 15, runners will head out for the 18th Annual Big Island International Marathon, half marathon and 5K.  Last year, new race directors Joe and Bob Wedemann made some changes to the course that pleased a lot of runners. Starting at Hilo Bayfont, the full and half marathons ran north out to a portion of the Old Scenic Road that was a highlight of the previous versions of the race.  After several miles, the course returned back to Hilo Bayfront before heading out on Banyan Drive and towards Richardson Beach Park.  The finish line is back on Bayfront, however, without the extra loop that made you get tantalizingly close with still 1/2 mile to go.

There is no limit on registrations, so there's still time to sign up! You can register and pick up your packet at the Health and Fitness Expo on Saturday, March 14 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Moku Ola Ballroom in the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel.  As usual, Big Island Running Company will also have a booth at the expo, giving you one last chance to stock up on your nutritional products, recovery items and Run Big gear!  Our Hilo store will also remain open on that day, with a full selection of all of our products. (In Kona, our Alii Drive store will be open all weekend, but our Kaloko store will be closed on Saturday).

On Saturday evening, get ready for the race with the Carbo Load Pasta Dinner and Hula Show at the Hilo Hawaiian Moku Ola Ballroom.  Tickets to this dinner are $25 in advance and $30 at the door.

On Sunday morning, the marathoners head out at 6:00 a.m. and the half marathoners follow at 6:15 a.m.  The 5k kicks off at 6:30 a.m.  Because this is Hilo, be prepared for anything in terms of the weather - including some downpours and wind like last year!  More information on the races and race weekend events are available at
