Running around the Christmas Tree!

As the calendar fills up with holiday events, make sure to squeeze some exercise in with these holiday-themed races!

On Saturday, December 19, Big Island Road Runners hosts their annual Jingle Bell Run at Prince Kuhio Plaza in Hilo.  This event starts at 7:30 a.m. and is a non-competitive fun run with many people choosing to dress up in festive, seasonal attire.  Runners and walkers can choose to go as many laps around Prince Kuhio Plaza as they want, with each lap equaling approximately one mile.  This event is free, but donations of toys and food for the Salvation Army are encouraged.

On that same day in Kona, chase Santa in the water at the Swim Santa Swim starting at 7:30 a.m. from the Kailua Pier.  This 1500 meter swim is $20 ($25 on race day), with proceeds benefitting the Waverider Triathlon Club.

The following day is the 11th Annual Jingle Bell Beach Run in Kona, starting and finishing at the Coconut Grove Marketplace.  The 5k Run/Walk starts at 7:30 a.m., with the 1-mile walk starting shortly after.   Once those events are completed, there will be a free keiki dash for the kids.  There are several highlights to this event, including the costume contest and the raffle prizes.  So dress up in costume and stick around to make sure you win something!

You can register for the Jingle Bell Beach Run online through December 18 and then at packet pickup on Saturday, December 19 from 9:00 a.m.-3 p.m. at Big Island Running Company's Coconut Grove location. But make sure to get registered in advance because there is no race day registration. More information is available on their website at

11th Annual Wobble Gobble Recap

On Thanksgiving morning, over 325 people showed up ready to run either 6.4 miles, 3.5 miles or 1 mile at the Walua Trail in the 11th Annual Wobble Gobble. This was an increase of over 50 people from last year! As usual, participants were asked to donate canned goods instead of an entry fee.  The group went above and beyond, collecting 483 pounds of canned goods for the Hawaii Island Food Basket, over 100 pounds more than last year!

The winners of each of the races was crowned the #1 Turkey with a Wobble Gobble trucker hat.  Defending 6.4 mile champion Thunder Frost ran shorter but faster than last year, winning the 1-mile distance and setting a new course record (5:29) in the process. Riley Blaber was the female 1-mile champion with a time of 7:19.  Kealakehe Waverider Ziggy Bartholomy battled out the 3.5 mile distance with Konawaena Wildcat Cody Ranfranz, with Ziggy beating Cody out by 1 second and also setting a new course record in 19:54. Laura Ankrum was the first female finisher in the 3.5 mile distance, coming in just seconds behind her son Alec. Another Kealakehe Waverider Adalberto Malago took first place in the 6.4 mile distance with a time of 40:21, while Monica Kincaid was the top female turkey in the 6.5 mile distance.

Thanks as always to our amazing volunteers who made it all possible, especially our family members Randy Minas and Greg Harris who helped with popsicle sticks and results for much our Thanksgiving Day.  James and Sarah Resor and Maggie McCleery helped out at our aid stations, while Laura Kniffin kept runners safe at the Sunset Road intersection.  Jackie Vega and Donna Ryngala handled the signouts this year.  Leonard Torricer, Chico, Uncle Jon Kunitake, John Ferdico, Ali Steiner, and Barbie and Tiffany Nakamura all helped with the set up and finish line area.  Thanks also to Under The Bodhi Tree who served some great post-run refreshments. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year!
