New Year's Run Resolutions!

Happy New Year from Big Island Running Company! We hope you had a wonderful holiday season and are ready to jump start your fitness again in 2015.  Joining one of our running groups is a great way to start a program and keep yourself motivated to stick with it.  We have several great options for you on both sides of the island this year!

First, you can join one of our weekly group runs in Hilo or Kona.  Hilo runs are held on Wednesday evening at 5:00 p.m. and Saturday mornings at 6:30 a.m., starting and finishing at our store on Hilo Bayfront.  Kona group runs are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 5 p.m. and Saturday mornings at 6:30 a.m. Those runs start and finish at our Alii Drive location in Kona.  All of our group runs are free and open to runners and walkers of all abilities, tourists and locals.  Distances are determined by the participants that day, although Saturday runs are typically longer than the weekday runs.

In connection with our Tuesday evening group runs in Kona, we partner with the Kailua Village Business Improvement District to host the Tuesday Trot 5k.  This weekly, non-competitive run starts at 5 p.m. and is led by Monica Price of Hoku Fitness and goes from Big Island Running Company's Alii Drive location, through Kailua Village, out to the Old Airport hockey rink and back. 

Finally, if 2015 is the year you want to work on increasing your speed, you can join our Run for Hops 5k/10k and Lavaman training program at our Alii Drive location.  This 8-week program will introduce you to speed workouts, which will coincide with our Tuesday/Thursday runs at 5 p.m. There we will break into groups of runners with similar paces and time goals. We will provide each runner with a training program consisting of four scheduled runs: the speed work and tempo runs during the week and two easy runs that participants complete on their own.

The training cycle will start on Thursday, January 15 at 5 p.m. at our Alii Drive store and will conclude with either the Run for Hops 5k/10k on March 14 or the Lavaman Waikoloa Triathlon on March 29.  If you have any questions on the training program, email John at or call 327-9333. 

Inspired to Run

The beginning of the year is a time when many people decide to start a running program as part of their New Year's Resolutions.  It's also a time for updates to popular shoe models.  Here are a couple of the newest versions of your old favorite running models:
  • Mizuno Wave Rider 18 ($119.99) - The Mizuno Wave Rider has long been a classic lightweight daily training shoe.  This year's model features an improved outsole and upgraded sock liner.  The U4ic midsole and forefoot flexibility continues to provide maximum comfort for runs of any distance.
  • Mizuno Wave Inspire 11 ($119.99) - For runners looking for a lightweight ride with some additional stability, the Wave Inspire 11 provides the perfect combination.  The Wave Inspire 11 has an improved mesh on the upper, as well as a more refined toe spring.
  • Brooks Adrenaline 15 ($120.00) - The Adrenaline GTS (aka go-to-shoe) is one of the most popular stability models on the market, so Brooks doesn't make too many drastic changes from year to year.  Their blended BioMoGo DNA midsole adjusts to every step, while the diagonal rollbar provides stability for overpronation, making this a great comfortable choice for all your training needs. We also carry this shoe in wide widths for men and women.

Runner Spotlight - 2014 Couch to 5K

In 2014, we had another great group of new and returning runners participate in our annual Couch to 5K program.  Starting in October, this group worked their way up from running 60 seconds at a time to completing the Jingle Bell Beach Run 5k on December 21.  Throughout the program, they received some great running tips from Ironman and Ultraman finisher Ellis Andrews, as well as Coach Maggie Leite, Kym and Miles Tagawa and all the other runners from our running group.

Everyone did a fantastic job keeping up with the program.  We had finishers ranging in age from their 20s to their 70s!  This year, the most improved award went to Glenda Johnson, while the most consistent award went to Patty Ilog. Thank you to Penn and Rani Henderson for helping to recognize these group members.

One of the greatest tips shared by Ellis Andrews is that completing the program is great accomplishment, but the bigger accomplishment is keeping it up for six months and making it a lifestyle.  We've already seen many of these runners back out at our group runs, so we think they will accept that challenge.  Congratulations again to all of our participants!
