Basement Waterproofing: Leak Prevention and Useful Tips

Prevent wet basements with a solid foundation, proper roof drainage

April showers won't just bring May flowers, but leaking wet basements too if homeowners don't maintain good outside drainage conditions. Wet basements are one of life's biggest headaches, yet waterproofing is generally easy to accomplish.

When basements leak, people panic. The trouble, however, can usually be traced to the drainage conditions around the outside of the house. Locks, Hinges and Door Hardware

Maintaining performance and useful life with proper maintenance

DoorknobLocks, hinges and door hardware, especially on exterior doors, need periodic lubrication and adjustment to operate properly. Frequent opening, closing and slamming can loosen hardware. Sagging of the door can cause excessive wear.
Inspecting and lubricating these components annually ensures smoother operation as well as proper door alignment, and will reduce wear on doors and frames.
  • Tighten loose bolts on doorknobs and handles.
  • Tighten loose screws in hinges.
  • Arrange to re-hang doors if they have begun to sag or stick.
  • Check that the door-closer valve is set.
  • Locks should be lubricated with special graphite designed for locks.
  • Hinges should be lubricated with penetrating oil.
Tips-Tricks-Hints

Carpet deodorizer

All those little fibers in carpeting really hold on to all kinds of smells that you don’t exactly want lingering in your home. Sprinkle baking soda liberally, let it sit overnight and sweep most of it up before vacuuming what’s left.

Baking soda absorbs the odors instead of trying to cover them with floral perfume.

Repel ants

Sprinkle dry, used coffee grounds in problem areas where you notice ants in your home or yard and they might just pick up and leave. To tackle huge ant mounds, pour an entire pot of brewed coffee right on the mound.

Spraying undiluted white vinegar around doorways and window sills discourages ants.
