Wake Up To Politics Podcast: Episode #2

The second episode of the Wake Up To Politics Podcast — a partnership between me and St. Louis Public Radio — is here.

This episode focuses on Gerrymandering in the 21st Century and features an interview with Professor Sam Wang of the Princeton Gerrymandering Project. Professor Wang and I discussed the sophisticated, high-tech methods both political parties use to manipulate congressional district maps for their political gain — and how he's trying to use those same methods to undo America's political divisions.

Want to learn more about partisan gerrymandering?
  • In the episode, we talk a lot about Virginia, one of the prime battlegrounds for partisan gerrymandering heading into the 2020 elections. Here's a blog post from the Princeton Gerrymandering Project this morning on the latest from the Virginia state legislature, where a redistricting reform package just advanced even closer to passage this week.
  • You can also check out this piece from NBC News late last year on the other top states to watch as the "gerrymandering wars" rage on, particularly in Southern states like Texas, Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina.
  • I also recommend diving into the fascinating story of the late gerrymandering mastermind Thomas Hofeller. Last month, his daughter Stephanie began begun posting his mammoth cache of redistricting computer files on a website she's titled The Hofeller Files, prying open this once-secret data just like Professor Wang is trying to do across the country.
