Topic: High Performance Houses

Having evaluated over 2,000 existing homes in Metro Vancouver and 1000 newly built homes, Einar will cover the following:
  • How do houses fit into energy and GHG emissions and government mandates to reduce GHG emissions?
  • History of construction, building science and energy codes.
  • What has been learned from 20 years of house evaluations?  Discussion of strategies, envelope versus mechanical improvements, costs and payback, comfort, and the role of renewable energy.
  • Future of energy sources.  Electricity versus gas.
  • How to move forward with green building codes and government codes.
  • Halbig Home - a high performance house which is fully monitored since it was renovated from an existing house during 2008.
